How to stop Outlook from jumping to older emails every time I click on unread email?

I started encountering this problem recently. I didn't make any changes that should have prompted this newfound issue. When I click on an unread email (I sort my emails by date, the newest at the top), Outlook will frequently automatically scroll down in my Inbox to older emails (usually to yesterday's or last week's emails). It also happens when I click on an older email after reading a new email. It doesn't do this every time, but I would say it does it more times than not. I searched to see if anyone else had encountered this problem and found a couple of posts. I followed Microsoft's instructions (disabling add-ins, repairing the application, restarting, updating, etc.), and nothing has fixed this issue. This is a super annoying glitch, and I'm tired of constantly scrolling back up in my inbox every time I go through my newer emails.

If it helps or matters, I use Microsoft 365 Apps for Business, Version 2411, Build 16.0.18227.20082. I do not like the new Outlook, so I am using the classic version on my desktop (not web-based). My computer is a Lenovo ThinkPad with Windows 11 Pro, 24H2 version.

This is what worked! Thank you! Hopefully Microsoft comes up with a permanent solution that doesn't render the focused inbox view unusable.

I was having a similar issue, but when I deleted an email, it would jump down to older emails, a quarter of the way down the list. I did not have focused inbox on, am up-to-date with all the office and windows updates, this just started happening out of the blue. A full online repair worked for me. Hope this helps someone.

I have a couple users with 365 that have this and nothing in this thread I tried worked.

I put in a ticket with Microsoft and they responded quickly and we retried and attempted a few things through quick assist but nothing resolved it even starting in safe mode. They confirmed this is a known issue, had no more suggestions to try but documented settings and forwarded this to their back end team who is still investigating this.

One workaround that mitigates it slightly is I noticed at least for one user, that it would jump down to emails roughly around 1-13-25 or a bit older. I moved all inbox emails older than 1-15-25 to a new subfolder and the jumping problem (so far) stays with that subfolder and the inbox functions normally so at least working with current emails they won't have to deal with it. It's possible that just sending a smaller chunk that includes all of the "bad" emails to a subfolder would work too.

[Some things tried: none had Grammarly, focused inbox toggled on/off, online office repair, reset views (in GUI and outlook.exe /cleanviews), disabled all add-ins, highlighted all emails and set "clear flags", also tried outlook.exe /cleanips and clicking "clear offline" items for inbox) (deleting the .ost would temporarily fix it until the cache repopulated to a certain point again. )]

Found this to be the solution

Outlook options --> Mail --> disable (uncheck) Highlight flagged items in the message list
