Hello,

I also had the problem and digged in a bit deeper using sysinternals Process Monitor to see what exactly fails, when the system tries to download the file in the temporary outlook folder. There I figured out that my problem was a somehow missing Attachments folder!

Please press WIN-R and type %userprofile%\appdata\local\microsoft\olk and press Enter.
Then an explorer windows opens. Check if you can see an Attachments folder. If not create one and problem might be solved for you.

That worked for me also! Great job! Microsoft should probably give you a hire!

I get this error message when trying to open any type of attachment from the desktop version of the new Outlook.

"Error occurred while opening the file. Please try again".

We also have the same problem in our ORG with a bunch of users.

We tried following things without success:

-Repaired the Outlook App and the Office365 programs

    -Repaired Webview 2

-Deleted Cache in all Browsers and in C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\16.0\OfficeFileCache

-Renew the local outlook profile on the pc

-Changed the update channel to the latest build

All these things didnt help us BUT we found a "fix".

We deleted the whole windows profile on the machine and logged back in. Now its working !

So the problem has to be a corrupt regestry key in the local windows profile. Unfortunately we didnt find out which key was the broken one....

But to be honest thats NOT a solution for bunch of users! Please @Microsoft fix this problem!!

    Cheers

How is it that some users have the "file and links" in settings while others don't? As far as I know there is no way to check for updates in new Outlook either.

"Happy" to see that I am not the only one facing this problem unfortunately...

This appeared to me like 1 or 2 weeks ago, whereas somehow at the very beginning when the option to open attachments with the desktop apps was rolled out (see here), it worked for some days.

Me and my IT department have tried to follow the different tips given here, but we could not manage to solve this problem. As I don't have the option to directly contact the Outlook assistance, I would like to use this forum to raise this problem also from my side and emphasize this might me an issue with the New Outlook which may cause trouble to a good number of people.

Currently the only way around I found to open attachments was to save them locally or on OneDrive, and open them. But it's not efficient and it's an important loss of time when you receive dozens of emails with attachments per day.

I like the new Outlook and will try to keep using it as much as I can, but if this problem is not solved quickly I will have no other choice than switching back to the classic version, which is more stable and reliable.
