Import a pst file into new outlook

I have no issue installing both versions on my new computer. Microsoft classic is up and running and works fine, as does the version which came with my new PC.

When I try to import the file it seems fine but then asks me for a password. I never saved the PST with a password. When I exported to a PST file it never asked me for a password. But when I try to open on a new computer it asks me for a password.

I’m not sure what password I am supposed to use. Original outlook?

Not sure why they ask for a password to import but not when exporting.

I was FORCED to switch to the new outlook by the windows update the BROKE the classic version. I could no longer connect to my domain email (and cannot roll back the update)

Can you provide a bit more detail on your domain? A .PST file should be from a POP account, can you tell me who the provider is (Gmail, Yahoo, etc.)? Perhaps you can use IMAP instead of POP with Classic and this provider. FWIW, I haven't updated this machine to Windows 11 yet either and. no updates (so far) have broken any of the accounts I have set up in Classic. Thanks!!

The .PST file was from outlook on another computer. I exported from that outlook to a pst file (dont remember version of outlook) and then tried to import that pst file into Oulook on my new PC. But would any of that effect why when i try to import the PST file into outlook it asks for a password?

That's important! Since this .PST was copied from another place (another computer, the Internet, some other source), there is a very good chance Windows set that file to Read Only. Outlook CANNOT use a Read Only .PST file, it will complain that the file needs a password (a hold-over from earlier days). Locate that .PST file on your new computer, select it, right click it, and select Properties:

If Read-only is set, like shown for this Word document, uncheck it and click Apply. Open Outlook Classic, then File > Open and Export > Open Outlook Data File. It should open and appear in the Nav/Folder pane on the left. Please see this article, the read-only .PST import/open error is explained:

Opening a PST file in Outlook is generally considered better than importing it because when you "open" the file, it appears as a separate folder in your Folder pane, allowing you to access the data without merging it with your existing mailbox. OTOH, importing will permanently integrate the data into your current mailbox, potentially causing duplicate entries or overwriting existing information; essentially, opening gives you more control over which data you want to access and when, whereas importing should be considered permanent.
