Mac Mail says unable to verify account name or password

Hi!

For a few weeks, I've been getting "enter password for hotmail" notification on my Mac. When I enter it, it says "Unable to verify account name or password". I've tried with POP, IMAP, Exchange... still have the same problem. I have another account on Mac Mail (not Outlook account) and works perfectly so I presume it's not coming from Mac but rather from Outlook.

Can someone help me please?

    I've been in the same situation as you including the fact that I am unable to update the OS on my 2010 MAC Pro so I'm stuck with OS 10.13.6. That is the problem. I spent a lot of time with Microsoft Customer Service. The end result is that I'm now having to use outlook.live.com for my multiple emails and MAC Mail is just sitting there. I also had deleted one of my .msn accounts and tried every suggestion here, e.g. using Exchange to try and add it and I even continue to try and add back with the original settings....as I said....now using outlook.live.com. Sorry for the bad news.

    Did they say, that if we upgraded our macs , that the problem would go away? I, too, have an old Mac. Thanks for the feedback!

    Yes...supposedly, the problem would go away. They said it was something about a double security issue that 10.13.6 couldn't handle and the OS needs to be upgraded. I have a new MAC but haven't had time to install it so I can't say for sure if the issue will resolve but given some of the other responses on here where no one has mentioned their operating system and yet, things they tried have worked, I'm counting on the new MAC to work for me....just wish I didn't have to wait until it gets installed. Outlook is okay and emails that are in your inbox in Mail will show in Outlook....just learning a new system is a pain you know where.

    I've tried and tried to re-add hotmail to my mac mail via Exchange option, but it just won't accept it.
    I'd love to find a work round, but it is appearing more and more remote.
    Fingers crossed some one can help.
