Mac Mail says unable to verify account name or password

Hi!

For a few weeks, I've been getting "enter password for hotmail" notification on my Mac. When I enter it, it says "Unable to verify account name or password". I've tried with POP, IMAP, Exchange... still have the same problem. I have another account on Mac Mail (not Outlook account) and works perfectly so I presume it's not coming from Mac but rather from Outlook.

Can someone help me please?

Thank you

Indeed, they also stopped working for me - changing them (the server settings) let me re-authenticate for a day or so then it stopped again - the only (unacceptable) workaround I have is to delete the hotmail account each time and reinstall it!

Please can we have a fix for this issue.

Hi! I don't think they will fix it. Did you receive a mail from Outlook called "Action needed: You may no longer be able to access some of your third-party email and calendar apps"? I received this mail in july 2024 (see below). All other accounts work fine on mac mail (gmail, infomaniak...). The only account that isn't working is Outlook (does Outlook force us to use its own applications?). For my part, I gave up. You can create a Gmail account (or other). You transfer emails from Outlook to Gmail (and from Gmail to Mac Mail by setting up Gmail in Mac Mail). In Mac Mail, you will receive Outlook emails (as if you were still connected to Outlook). When you send an email, however, it will be with your gmail address. This solution is far from perfect but personally it ok for me.

    English (google traduction):

On September 16, 2024, apps that use less secure sign-in technology will no longer be able to access your email.

The security of your information is Microsoft’s top priority. To help keep your account secure, Microsoft will no longer support third-party email and calendar apps that require you to sign in with only your Microsoft account username and password. To increase your security, you’ll need to use an email or calendar app that supports Microsoft’s modern authentication methods. If you don’t take action, your third-party email apps will no longer be able to access your Outlook.com, Hotmail, or Live.com email address on September 16, 2024.

    What should you do?

If you’re receiving this email, you’re currently using an email or calendar app that uses a less secure authentication method to sign in to your Outlook.com email account. You’ll need to upgrade your third-party email and calendar apps to a version that supports modern authentication methods.

Microsoft offers free versions of Outlook for your PC and Mac, iOS, and Android devices that can be easily downloaded and connected to your email account. Using an updated version of an Outlook app ensures that you’re signing in in the most secure way.

How can you set up your Gmail, Apple Mail, or third-party email app?

Different non-Microsoft apps will have their own way to sign in to your Outlook.com email account with modern authentication methods. See our help article, “Modern authentication methods now required to continue syncing Outlook email in non-Microsoft email apps.” However, you may need to contact the makers of those apps for instructions. In many cases, simply removing and re-adding your account with the latest version of that app will set it up to use modern authentication methods.

Hi and thanks for your reply - merci

I vaguely recall receiving an email but it didn't seem to be relevant at the time, not least since I mainly use an iPhone (iOS) and a Samsung (Google Android) for my day to day email. I've not spent so much time in my study/office (where the iMac is) during summer.

Anyway, I have had some time to look at this a little deeper and try to resolve for my Macbook and iMac.

I believe the workaround is to use the MS Exchange option when setting up the account as described in this article

    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/255662843?sortBy=rank

Therefore I have again deleted the account, and when setting up again, rather than choose account type 'Other' (add Other Account) I choose 'Exchange' - and rather than choose 'set up manually' I follow the automated process including a MS Hotmail login and it is set up - there werre a few old meeting requests/reminders that came through, but otherwise easy.

It is now working - I will see if it now settles and continues to work okay.

I note however that the earlier poster stated that it did not work when he tried Exchange - maybe his issue is different...

Hi! You are probably referring to my previous post:

In the link you provide, it says: "When you add an email account to Mail on your Mac, choose Microsoft Exchange for email accounts that end with onmicrosoft.com and for accounts that end with outlook.com, hotmail.com, or live.com."

I've already done this as I said in my first post: even choosing Microsoft Exchange doesn't work (it works for a few hours and then the problem comes back).

I've probably tried every possible combination (manually, automatically, with or without login and pass, etc.) but it did not work. I hope it will be different for you but I doubt it (it may work for a few days but then the problem will come back).

Since switching to the Exchange option when setting up the account again it has been okay for me - now three days and no further problems. I will keep checking it. If I used the old setup/authentication it would have stopped working again by now.

Might be worth others trying - delete the account and reestablish it using the Exchange option

I know some people are concerned they will loose folders/data but for me no such problem.
