Mac Mail says unable to verify account name or password

Hi!

For a few weeks, I've been getting "enter password for hotmail" notification on my Mac. When I enter it, it says "Unable to verify account name or password". I've tried with POP, IMAP, Exchange... still have the same problem. I have another account on Mac Mail (not Outlook account) and works perfectly so I presume it's not coming from Mac but rather from Outlook.

Can someone help me please?

Thank you

    Hi There,

I'm still having this same issue, are you? Has there been any solution/fix that has worked? I'm now contemplating having to migrate eveything to my backup gmail account, but what a mission that would be!

    Thanks,

    Mandy

Hi and thanks for your reply - merci

I vaguely recall receiving an email but it didn't seem to be relevant at the time, not least since I mainly use an iPhone (iOS) and a Samsung (Google Android) for my day to day email. I've not spent so much time in my study/office (where the iMac is) during summer.

Anyway, I have had some time to look at this a little deeper and try to resolve for my Macbook and iMac.

I believe the workaround is to use the MS Exchange option when setting up the account as described in this article

    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/255662843?sortBy=rank

Therefore I have again deleted the account, and when setting up again, rather than choose account type 'Other' (add Other Account) I choose 'Exchange' - and rather than choose 'set up manually' I follow the automated process including a MS Hotmail login and it is set up - there werre a few old meeting requests/reminders that came through, but otherwise easy.

It is now working - I will see if it now settles and continues to work okay.

I note however that the earlier poster stated that it did not work when he tried Exchange - maybe his issue is different...

    Hi Mandy Meaden,

No solution. It still doesn't work. I ended up creating a Gmail account (which works perfectly in Mac Mail). In Outlook options I asked to redirect emails to my Gmail (to receive them in Mac Mail). So now in Mac Mail I receive mails from both Outlook and Gmail and if I want to send a mail in Mac Mail, I can do it using the gmail. Good luck!

    Hello  Emmanuel Balan1,

    Welcome to the Microsoft Community!

When you encounter a Mac Mail prompt that you cannot verify your account name or password, we understand your frustration.

According to your description, I understand that in your computer, one account is normal while the other account has this problem, which seems to be caused by the problem of the account configuration file.

On the MacBook, there is no direct option to repair mail account profiles similar to the one in the Windows Control Panel. However, you can try the following steps to resolve email account issues:

For details, you can follow these documents:

    1. Remove your email account in Mail.
    2. Add your email account in Mail again. When adding the account, make sure that you choose the correct email service provider for your email address.

Disclaimer: Microsoft provides no assurances and/or warranties, implied or otherwise, and is not responsible for the information you receive from the third-party linked sites or any support related to technology.

Please note that this process may result in the loss of your local mail data, so it is recommended that you back up your mail data before performing this operation.

In addition, due to recent updates from Apple, there may be some differences in the Settings. If you cannot successfully complete the above operations, or the above troubleshooting steps do not work, you can contact the dedicated support personnel of Outlook for Mac support, please go to Help > Contact Support. Contact support within Outlook for Mac - Microsoft Support. They are more knowledgeable about Outlook for Mac issues and have more resources to investigate and fix issues.

I hope the above can point you in the right direction and wish you a smooth solution to the problem!

    Best Regards ,
