Search no longer works in Outlook. When I try to type something in the search field, it 'flashes' and nothing is entered. This morning there was both an Outlook and a Windows update.

I had a similar issue and MS Support couldnt help, and closed my case. In the end, I find that the issue was that the "Recoverable items folder" was full. There were 90,000 emails sitting there.
This folder is not immediately on view, but to access it click on the deleted items folder - then click on the the link at the top of the column to the right that says "Recover items recently removed from this folder". It took a few hours to clear everything and for the indexing to catch up.
Hope this helps
Rob
My peers on the consumer team let me know today that they raised a new incident for the search issue. A fix started rolling out late on 11/5. If you are using Outlook.com on the web you will need to refresh the browser to pick up the changes. I am not able to tell how far the fix is rolled out but hopefully it gets to everyone soon.
The fix going out on 11/5 is only for Outlook.com. If you have an M365 work account please collect a network trace with the repro and escalate to your tenant admin to open a ticket from the admin portal, How to collect a network trace | Microsoft Learn.
I'm getting the same message!
