Email from Microsoft titled "Action Needed – You may lose access to some of your third-party mail and calendar apps" Is this a scam?

The sender is "******@communication.microsoft.com"

Its telling us that "Microsoft will no longer support the use of third-party email and calendar apps which ask you to sign in with only your Microsoft Account username and password. To keep you safe you will need to use a mail or calendar app which supports Microsoft’s modern authentication methods."

I access hotmail email accounts from a MacbookAir laptop using the Apple email app. Also access from an iPhone 11.

It seems legit. Can anyone confirm if it is?

    Good morning, Hal. I'm thinking you will be able to easily answer my question. I keep getting the connection/password messages on my iMac running Ventura 13.6.7 for my live.com email account, using the built-in Mail app (blue/white envelope). To do this fix, and when you/the instructions say to delete the account and then set it up again using outlook.com, does that mean my email address changes from live.com to outlook.com? And that would then entail having to notify all my online contacts of my new email address? While that might help reduce the junk email I'm getting, it could still be an onerous task. I'm hoping I'm just not understanding the fix instructions.

    It was explained to me the other day that Microsoft will no longer accept POP/SMTP interactions, however other servers (who I talke to) will continue to work in Outlook 2016. So, this means that if you are using Microsoft emails like hotmail, live etc. you must begin using the Exchange method to syn with Outlook, but other emails that are not Microsoft will continue on as their servers (unless notified otherwise) will not be affected. If you are on a browser checking your email, this won't affect you either.

    Because I also received this 'warning/announcement' email in my Outlook mail accessed on their website, I'm guessing it's an auto generated email sent to all users - even though my email contained a line saying 'you are receiving this email because you access your account using a third party...'

    Hi Stan433,

    First let me declare that I am not an expert, but do understand your need for clarity in simple terms. I just tried the following and then it seems to have worked for me. I have a desktop version of Outlook 2016 and was using the doomed POP/SMTP method of syncing. In following directions from Microsoft (as I understood them) I did the following(please read as you go so you don't download a years worth of emails you already have):

    In Outlook select File/Account Settings/Email address you are using/New/Advanced/Set Up Manually/Outlook.com.

    This created a new folder with the same email using, what I believe, the newer Exchange/Modern Authentication method. After that, just because I prefer, I moved all of the contents from my POP/SMTP folders(Inbox, Sent, Deleted) to my new folders of the same email. I will wait a few days to see if my emails are correctly downloading into the new email folder(same address) that I just created and then I will delete the older folder(same address) using the POP/SMTP.

    Lastly, let me again remind you that I am not an expert and, although, this seemed to be the right answer, I am not trying to lead you astray. If anyone wants to offer a different solution, I would love to hear that.
