Hi everyone, I am getting this error message again, "Unable to verify account name or password" from my hotmail.it account on the MacBook. Despite attempting all the solutions suggested by Google/Apple, none seem to resolve the issue. A temporary fix I found was to delete hotmail account from the mail account list, and then re-add it again. This worked for a few weeks, but then the error message resurfaced. Any assistance with this matter would be greatly appreciated. Best Regards, Felicia.

I have the same issue on Apple Mail app. It seems to be an issue with the MacOS updates as its working fine on iOS. I deleted the live.com from mac mail and readd- working fine now. Please note I also think it may be a conflict if you are using two step verification.
Same problem here. Just randomly get that error. Actually, an advice "try again several times" from person above helps. But I'm asking to fix the issue.
In your Microsoft account settings go to "Settings>Mail>Sync email" and uncheck/disable "Let devices and apps use POP"

I was able to resolve the same issue. The symptoms and solution for me is as follows:
Setup:
- In Mac Mail, I had my Outlook.com email account setup as IMAP, similar to other IMAP accounts
- The servers, ports and SSL settings were auto-selected my Mac Mail
- My mail servers were auto selected to imap-mail.outlook.com and smtp-mail.outlook.com
Symptoms:
- After working for several years, suddenly, Mac would show a message to re-type the password for the Outlook.com account
- If the password, which was unchanged for over 6 months, is supplied, connection attempt fails and a message says "Unable to verify account name or password"
Solution:
- These were failed attempts: tried all of these and failed -
- Turning IMAP off/on from outlook.com,
- Turning off POP from outlook.com,
- Removing the outlook.com account from Mac and trying to add it again,
- Using 'outlook.office365.com' as the incoming IMAP server
- What worked for me: Then, I tried adding the account in Mac Settings > Internet Accounts as "Microsoft Exchange"
- Mac Settings > Internet Accounts > Add Account ...
- Select "Microsoft Exchange"
- Enter email and password
- The rest was auto configured by Mac
- Select which services I want connected (I only chose "Email")
- Once completed, it connected successfully and now receiving/sending emails
For now, this has been working and I thought I would share this for others to try.
