Hi everyone, I am getting this error message again, "Unable to verify account name or password" from my hotmail.it account on the MacBook. Despite attempting all the solutions suggested by Google/Apple, none seem to resolve the issue. A temporary fix I found was to delete hotmail account from the mail account list, and then re-add it again. This worked for a few weeks, but then the error message resurfaced. Any assistance with this matter would be greatly appreciated. Best Regards, Felicia.

this worked for me, many thanks. Will be moving to gmail soon to avoid future stress...
I was able to resolve the same issue. The symptoms and solution for me is as follows:
Setup:
- In Mac Mail, I had my Outlook.com email account setup as IMAP, similar to other IMAP accounts
- The servers, ports and SSL settings were auto-selected my Mac Mail
- My mail servers were auto selected to imap-mail.outlook.com and smtp-mail.outlook.com
Symptoms:
- After working for several years, suddenly, Mac would show a message to re-type the password for the Outlook.com account
- If the password, which was unchanged for over 6 months, is supplied, connection attempt fails and a message says "Unable to verify account name or password"
Solution:
- These were failed attempts: tried all of these and failed -
- Turning IMAP off/on from outlook.com,
- Turning off POP from outlook.com,
- Removing the outlook.com account from Mac and trying to add it again,
- Using 'outlook.office365.com' as the incoming IMAP server
- What worked for me: Then, I tried adding the account in Mac Settings > Internet Accounts as "Microsoft Exchange"
- Mac Settings > Internet Accounts > Add Account ...
- Select "Microsoft Exchange"
- Enter email and password
- The rest was auto configured by Mac
- Select which services I want connected (I only chose "Email")
- Once completed, it connected successfully and now receiving/sending emails
For now, this has been working and I thought I would share this for others to try.

EDIT: Thanks to Jennifer Mathews2's post on June 29, 2024 and George Christides' reference of it on Jul 31, 2024
Thanks a lot,
I have been looking for a solution to this problem for days - your "WHAT WORKED FOR ME" now really seems to work. How simple that is. Just one more question: Once the new EXCHANGE ACCOUNT has been fully loaded, may I delete the other HOTMAIL ACCOUNT from my MAC APPLE MAIL in order to reduce data volume in my MAC? Maybe I first will disconnect after having checked for a few days the stability of the new EXCHANGE ACCOUNT and will see what happens.
Gladly there contribute people like you to the community.
Best Regards
MF
UPDATE Sep 21, 2024:
I posted my first reply on August 6, 2024. More than a month has passed now - since then my system and download works perfect. Really appreciate your solution! / After including MS EXCHANGE as new mail account, I switched to MAIL/Preferences/Exchange/Server Settings and checked that the tick mark "Automatically manage connection settings" is set and the Password is empty (no password here). Maybe that helps also someone...
UPDATE Jan 06, 2025:
I now deleted my original (inactive) HOTMAIL account, leaving alive only the MS EXCHANGE account. So far no impact... - so the initial solution by Jennifer and George works until today without any troubles.
Thanks to Mimo'ed I could log in on iMac!
I have the same problem!! Tried everything and NOTHING works for my iMac. What is going on with Microsoft?
