I'm not able to add my work 365 basic account in this new Outlook anymore. I get this error: "This account is not supported in Outlook for Windows due to the license provided by your work or school. Try to login with another account or go to Outlook on the web."
This is ridiculous that I'm able to add my personal Gmail, my personal Outlook email, but can't add my work account which my company pays money for. Now you want to charge us more by upgrading from basic to standard to able to use your new Outlook I see. I also noticed ads right in my Inbox in this new Outlook. Seriously? Ads too now? Well, it seems like you're very desperate lately dear Microsoft and using such enforcing brute tactics on us - users won't do good for you. It will have opposite effect in fact: Now I will tell my IT boss to switch to Google instead. And guess what? I won't be the only one doing this. You know what's your problem, Microsoft? You never listen and you never care about us. You just do what you want to do and it's all about squizzing money out of us while giving us worst products compared to other companies.
P.S. By the way, your new Outlook sucks and everything you give us lately sucks too.

If you use any other email service with this version of Outlook you can use it for free. (Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook.com FFS)
If I'm a PAYING M365 CUSTOMER, I cant use outlook with my M365 account, unless I pay more?!?!?
Got it. Now Outlook is free. Buy M365 EOP 1, and you aren't allowed to use Outlook anymore.
Cancelling M365 and using a different mail provider sounds like the way to go if you want to use Outlook for free. Use any of the competitors cheap mail plans and switch them. Then you can use Outlook.

I just ran into the same issue myself. This change doesn't make any sense whatsoever.
I have 2x Microsoft 365 Business Basic for my two domains. One is handling my own e-mail. and the second is handling my wifes e-mail.
The only reason we pay for Microsoft 365 Business Basic is to be able to have Hosted-Exchange to use our own domains for our e-mails. We have been using Microsoft 365 Business Basic / Hosted-Exchange for years because we find the administration and the use of Exchange Active Sync to be superior compared to using Google, Apple and others using IMAP IDLE is not as efficient with notification handling as Exchange Active Sync.
We haven't had any need to pay for any higher level of Microsoft 365 Business because we already have Microsoft 365 Family which provides access to desktop applications such as Microsoft Outlook. We both also have Microsoft 365 Enterprise E5 via our employer which also allows us to use them on private devices to gain access to desktop applications.
This change is just absurd and completely tonedef. Why on earth should we be required to upgrade our Microsoft 365 Business Basic plans when we already have access to desktop applications via other subscriptions already? To make it even stupider, the "legacy" Microsoft Outlook still functions as normal, allowing for adding Microsoft 365 Business Basic e-mail accounts. It's only the "New Outlook" for Windows that won't allow it. Even "New Outlook" for macOS doesn't block this.
Surely this has to be an oversight and mistake with the latest update to "New Outlook" for Windows?
I am having same issue. This is what I have found after switching to new Outlook:
My main email account worked (standard). Another email account didn't work (Standard) - both previously in old Outlook
I added another of my exchange emails NOT previously in old Outlook, basic licence - It worked
I tried removing the other email account that was previously in old Outlook from accounts in system, then trying again - it still will not work. Other email accounts not associated with Microsoft work
To me it seems like it is not a basic vs standard licence issue. Maybe it is a glitch where accounts that are not the one associated with the desktop app that were in old Outlook are causing the issue. Any help would be appreciated.
And this idiotic new Outlook doesn't even have feedback button to at least try to send them link of this thread, so maybe the can look at this problem and see how many people are complaining...
