I'm not able to add my work 365 basic account in this new Outlook anymore. I get this error: "This account is not supported in Outlook for Windows due to the license provided by your work or school. Try to login with another account or go to Outlook on the web."

This is ridiculous that I'm able to add my personal Gmail, my personal Outlook email, but can't add my work account which my company pays money for. Now you want to charge us more by upgrading from basic to standard to able to use your new Outlook I see. I also noticed ads right in my Inbox in this new Outlook. Seriously? Ads too now? Well, it seems like you're very desperate lately dear Microsoft and using such enforcing brute tactics on us - users won't do good for you. It will have opposite effect in fact: Now I will tell my IT boss to switch to Google instead. And guess what? I won't be the only one doing this. You know what's your problem, Microsoft? You never listen and you never care about us. You just do what you want to do and it's all about squizzing money out of us while giving us worst products compared to other companies.

P.S. By the way, your new Outlook sucks and everything you give us lately sucks too.

    I gave in and upgraded to E3. Still getting the same error. Now what?

    Same issue here, I think. Main account is using an M365 E5 which includes the licensing for Outlook. The second account I'm trying (and failing) to add is on an M365 Business Basic license and I think this is the problem. If the account was a free outlook.com account it would be fine, but as it's an M365 account it seems to throw the error as that M365 license doesn't include use of Outlook. Obviously the M365 E5 does, and the licensing is per-user, so I don't see why this is a problem.

    Please clarify: Are you saying that the account being added to Outlook must be associated with a license that allows desktop apps to add it to Outlook on desktop?

    I have a business standard M365 account which comes with desktop apps. I’ve had Outlook for Mac installed and my business account linked successfully for several years.

    I’m now trying to add another email account (my m365 account on my client’s tenant), but I keep getting a similar message as the one that started this thread. The only difference is that it says Mac instead of Windows.

    It seems many users here are experiencing the same thing, but as they have pointed out, the logic being used to explain the reason seems faulty.

    Outlook is an email client. I have a license to use Outlook. It doesn’t make sense that I wouldn’t be able to add an account simply because that account holder doesn’t have a license to use Outlook (desktop app).

    More MicoShaft greedy licence BS!

    I have customers where each user has standard licenced but some joint mailboxes are basics, these are added to the user's Outlooks and to phones and other apps.
    (Shared won't work or are unreliable, so we have to use a licence)

    The joint mailboxes do not need a standard licence, that is already provided by the main user licence.

    Most of my customer would walk away from Microsoft in a heartbeat, with a beaming smile!

    I got here after upgrading to the 'new Outlook' and receiving the following error for two out of 3 email accounts: "This account is not supported in Outlook for Windows due to license provided by your work or school. Try to login with another account or would you like to remove it?".

    I pay for Office 365 Family which includes the Office Desktop apps and I use it for an @outlook.com account, another personal mailbox with a custom .name domain, and my business mailbox (freelancer). For my custom .name domain and my business mailbox I pay for Exchange Online (Plan 1) that costs me 4,44 EUR/month/account. Are you really telling me that I have now to pay to upgrade to Exchange Online (Plan 2) for these two accounts which will cost me 9,00 EUR/month/account just to be able to use it with the Outlook desktop app?

    Since when has Microsoft become so greedy?
