New Outlook vs. Outlook in Microsoft 365

I have two email accounts which I happily view via imap on my Lumia 950. Since I'm no longer allowed to see my outlook mail on the lumia (or people or weather or calendar) , I thought I'd give it a try. On the PC I clicked on the gear wheel in new outlook's caption bar, it showed me the accounts and said I have to log in. I entered the passwords and was told "Something went wrong, I may have to use an App password"

Your answer is very helpful! I found your answer is telling us that some functions is missing in the new outlook comparing to the classic version.

May I ask if the "send update only to new receiver" function is missing in the the new outlook? :)

I already have the paid account. From within Outlook, I clicked the radio button to use "New Outlook".

Why does it contain ads if I already pay for this?

This is a reply to "thebondservant" regarding their response on March 21, 2024.

Background: Up to last fall of 2023, I had been using the Windows 10 Mail, People, Calendar apps. I then was forced by Microsoft over to the "new Outlook." Note that I never used the "classic Outlook" desktop program that's part of Office loaded on my desktop. I quickly experienced the many great features I was used to having were not available in the "new Outlook." I am getting more comfortable with the new Outlook but I have two significant issues with it that no one seems to be able to help me with solutions...Microsoft tech help center, web forums, Microsoft Community, etc. I have Windows 10 and using new Outlook email program...

1. I cannot keep incoming emails (unread/bold) that arrive in my inbox, to turn "un-bold" when read (clicked on). Also, when I move "read" emails to other folders or trash bin, they turn back to being "bold" like unread emails.
2. I have been unable to find a solution online through Microsoft Support and forums, on how to turn off the "autosave" feature in new Outlook. It is very frustrating to have partial draft emails saved at different stages to the "draft" folder, not knowing what really had been sent or not. Also, an occasional draft email continues to remain in the draft and/or delete folders and I cannot make them disappear forever. I delete them and they will return next time I access the delete folder.

You know that’s a great question. The Outlook Client that’s just one of many programs included in our 365 subscriptions has been my mainstay since Windows messaging and Exchange. Very powerful and deep but I think functionally what’s being referred to as the “new” Outlook is, as was mentioned, is a stripped down web interfaced version with some enhancements. That doesn’t your question in regards to marketing and Lord knows the mind of Microsoft but Karl gave the best insight I think as it pertains to functionally.

Hello Gardis_SE Hi, I'm Karl and will be happy to help you today. First, some basics The "new Outlook" is the replacement for the Windows 10 / 11 Mail, People, Calendar apps. It is essentially "Outlook on the web" (accessing an Outlook.com account via a browser), wrapped in an app framework with the added functionality to add external IMAP accounts. It is not (currently) a replacement for the Outlook desktop program (part of Office) which has a great many features not available in "new Outlook". One of the benefits of using the "new Outlook" is that all devices connecting to an IMAP account will be able to see contact /calendar data when the "new Outlook" app us used. Something which cannot be done with IMAP accounts configured in the classic Outlook desktop program (.part of Office) Things to look forward to in the new Outlook for Windows https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/outlook-blog/things-to-look-forward-to-in-the-new-outlook-for-windows/ba-p/3975602 It will be a while before the "new Outlook" catches up to classic Outlook in terms of features so there is no simple "on size fits all" answer as to when one should be used over the other. For instance, POP accounts and PST files are not supported in "new Outlook".
