NEW Outlook app: how to add an IMAP account with user name different from email address?

The advanced configuration will allow me to specify an SMTP user name but there is no way to configure the IMAP user name being different from the email-address.

    Are there some versions of Outlook that include this functionality?

    I can, at least, answer this part for you: Outlook 365 aka Outlook Classic - includes it.

    This is currently how I'm accessing my IMAP account on my Windows 10 PC. Since my Windows 10 installation will end of life in October, this solution works for me for now.

    However - according to Microsoft - they want most people to transition from Outlook Classic to Outlook New by April 2026:

    Microsoft's plan is for the entire transition over to the new Outlook app to be completed by April 2026, but “existing installations of classic Outlook through perpetual and subscription licensing will continue to be supported until at least 2029,” said one Microsoft representative who reached out to us.

    If Microsoft is following this thread, we would appreciate a comment on whether this issue is expected to be addressed, or what solution you recommend. Are there some versions of Outlook that include this functionality?

    April 2025. I got a notice today to move to 'New Outlook'. Ran into this snag, (can't add custom username for IMAP login) and now my email is broken.

    What a joke Microsoft.

    As far as I know, the only way to add accounts to Outlook (New) is within the program itself, not via the Control Panel.

    At least, that's true with Windows 10. I haven't used Windows 11 yet, so I can't speak to that.

    In Windows 10, I have verified that the only small icon in the Control Panel is "Mail (Microsoft Outlook)" and that definitely only connects to Outlook (classic), not Outlook (new). Outlook (new) ignores the Control Panel settings and also does not appear to allow the use of a login that is not the same as the email address.

    I'll do a follow-up post with Windows 11 soon.
