Upgrading to new outlook will not accept IMAP accounts

Same problem as many below when moving over to New Outlook on windows 10/11 machines. These are all running on a Microsoft 365 home licence. When I try to move my imap accounts to New Outlook, the software responds with 'you may need an app password'. My email provider (not google, yahoo, apple) doesn't know what Microsoft is talking about, says they don't provide/have 'app passwords', that if Thunderbird, gmail, old Outlook etc all work fine, then they don't know what the problem is, it must be a Microsoft issue.

Dispiriting, as the interface for entering imap/smtp details is better and the Microsoft help site says all the imap and smtp details entered are correct. As one correspondent said earlier, it was the same with Outlook for android on a mobile when Microsoft changed that. It stopped working for 1 year, then it started being able to pick up mails, and after about 18 months it would send mails reliably as well, letting me stop using gmail (which worked without problems the whole time). Not a great changeover.

I wish MSoft could sort this or tell us what we need to do to make it work. Please help!

As my IMAP account works fine in the new Outlook I have just added a 2nd account using IMAP, and that works OK as well. It was just so easy, I gave the email address and then the password, and Microsoft set it up correctly in 2 minutes;

Much easier than the old Mail program;

@squeezy, and that's with 365 Personal (or home/whatever)? Or do you have a 365 Professional businesses account?

My last attempt last week failed again. despite the opening screen of New Outlook actually saying "Outlook supports Microsoft 365, Gmail, Yahoo, and IMAP." This was the error:

I have seven computers with Windows 11 installed and a couple of Android smartphones.. I have numerous MS accounts along with IMAP accounts in my own domain and a single GMail account, - only a single to use where absolutely necessary as I don't like Google taking my data and selling it. The Android phones are using the MS Outlook app.

Back in the day, with the computers I had with Windows 7/8/10, I used Outlook in Office 2010/2013 as it had features that surpassed those of Windows Mail. Then when the Outlook app for Windows 10 arrived I decided to switch clients to that as Outlook in Office had things that were a "tad" confusing for some users. Then Microsoft morphed Outlook.com into Microsoft Exchange. This obsoleted Office 2013 while Office 2016/2019 were updated to handle MS Exchange. The old Windows 10/11 app worked okay even with IMAP accounts but it did have some problems like disappearing emails which some seemed to reappear after a couple of weeks.

I have tried to install the New Outlook for over a year now over numerous iterations with zero success on IMAP accounts. Here I should note that the New Outlook appears to be just an agent app for online Outlook.com, thus you need constant access to Microsoft's Internet empire..

After a year of frustration I am in the process of converting all my email clients to Office 2016/2019. This works just fine however the job takes time and is not an easy one. Plus now Microsoft is kissing goodbye to Office 2016 and 2019, giving end-of-life dates for both and saying that they may no longer work with future versions of MS Exchange. Microsoft wants everyone to transition to Office 365 at exorbitant rental rates. (There is a new name that has been announced foe 365 but I can't remember it.)

This whole thing is a debacle. What is wrong with Microsoft?

One final note. The Android version of Outlook seems to work fine except for one flaw. You can't change IMAP passwords. It says you can but you can't. You have to delete then reinstall the account.
