Hey there, my name is Ajibola and I'm excited to help you today!

Indeed, the new Outlook for Windows does not support IMAP accounts yet. This means that you cannot add your email account from Yahoo!, iCloud, or other providers that use IMAP protocols to the new Outlook app. The new Outlook for Windows currently supports Exchange-backed Microsoft 365 work or school accounts, Outlook.com accounts, and Gmail accounts.

However, there is some good news. The new Outlook for Windows team is working hard to add support for more account types in the future, including IMAP accounts. They have not announced a specific timeline for this feature. Still, they have stated that they are listening to user feedback and prioritizing the most requested features https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/getting-started-with-the-new-outlook-for-windows-656bb8d9-5a60-49b2-a98b-ba7822bc7627. You can check their blog posts and release notes for the latest updates on the new Outlook for Windows development.

In the meantime, you can still use the classic Outlook for Windows app to access your IMAP account, or use a web browser to access your email provider's website. You can also switch back and forth between the new and classic Outlook for Windows apps by using the toggle switch at the top-right corner of the window.

If you have any further questions or need additional assistance, please feel free to ask. I'm here to help!

If you click on 'help' I find the option to return to classic outlook appears (not always immediately, but sometimes after a few seconds). They're making it harder to switch back. I'm currently using classic outlook, but I've also setup all my emails on Thunderbird in anticipation to when the option to switch back ceases altogether.

I guess IMAP would work for me too, but the following popup notice was an immediate show-stopper for me so I gave up the configuration.

This is the notice I received when about to configure new Outlook (on Win 11 Home 23H2) for my IMAP accounts:

Which means new Outlook doesn't retrieve your emails directly from the corresponding IMAP servers but instructs some robot from M365 cloud to do so on its behalf.

AFAIK this is a regression from previous Mail application and a no-go for me, I don't want these emails to be synced to Microsoft's cloud.

    Looking for another client.

    Hi All,

This problem has not been resolved yet.

When I activate the new Outlook it requests for the password of my IMAP account.

After I enter this it won't work.

Then I try again, but now I go to the advanced settings. Then I see that it has a wrong server address for my account. This was not the setting I used in the old version, so no clue where Outlook gets this from.

Changing it to the correct server address doesn't seem to help. Outlook keeps coming with the same mystical generic error:

Something went wrong...you might need an App Password

When I then try to add it as a new account, I get a slightly different path but same results:

    {"SessionId":"d809428c-d2c9-8249-9114-d2c396efce99","Timestamp":1708350404527,"Error":"INVALIDCREDENTIALS TEMPORARILYUNAVAILABLE"}

For now I can still return to the classical version, that still works.

I quit using the classic Outlook.com because it no longer accepted my "other" non-Microsoft product e-mail accounts, Which defeated the purpose for even trying Outlook.com. So sorry to hear the new Outlook, com will not accept other e-mail accounts either.
