For some emails, yellow envelope started appearing in email icons in Outlook. What does it mean?

Starting this week, some emails (all of them are sent from internal domain) in Outlook shows yellow envelope icon. Opening and reading this email does not make this icon disappear. The only way to get rid of if it is to reply to the email, then the envelope is replaced with arrow.

Is this some new feature, bug or something is wrong iwth our Exchange server?

    I found a pattern:

    We have an addin for Sensitivity labels.

    The following pattern is consistent from the 18th of March onwards:

    • For company internal email (where sensitivity is set), the envelope icon shows up.
      • When sending email to myself from webmail - without the sensitivity label addin - no such icon shows up
      • After replying or forwarding the message, the icon changes to the respective arrows
    • For emails from externals, no such icon shows up.

    For emails sent before this date the pattern is not consistent:

    • Some internal emails have this envelope icon starting on the 14th of March
    • E-mail warnings from Outlook with the message "Your mailbox is almost full." all have this envelope icon.

    Hi,

    We are also experiencing the exact same issue. So it would be great to hear from Microsoft with a reason why this has changed.... could it potentially be a bug that Microsoft have introduced themselves?

    exact same problem here with the envolope for internal emails

    can confirm same behaviour on Outlook 2013 and Outlook 365 desktop apps
