Users are experiencing an issue where the New Teams window keeps appearing unexpectedly while they're working on Outlook or other applications. This problem started on March 19, 2024, in New Zealand.

Despite attempting various solutions like clearing Teams caches, uninstalling and reinstalling the application, disabling Teams on startup, and restarting the device, the problem persists. Reinstalling Teams temporarily resolves the issue, but it reoccurs shortly afterward.

Could suggest any futher troubleshooting?

Current status: We’ve determined that a recent Microsoft Teams desktop update introduced a code issue that is causing the impact. Our code change to remediate this issue has begun deployment and we expect that it will saturate all affected environments by Tuesday, April 2, 2024. We’ll provide regular updates on the progress of the deployment and any changes to the estimated completion timeline.

Good to know -- thanks for that info. I am aware this could self update at any point, but I am just in the waiting game to see when that happens for now.

Meanwhile, we have told our users to stick with Classic Teams and I am not telling my users to move to New Teams. The only people on New Teams are the people who I have as testers that I did the sign out and sign in back to client version 49/24020205514. From here it's just waiting for the other shoe to drop, or hope there's an update that has resolved this by then.

Logging out deletes your stored profile and the updated version in it. If you can't block the automatic update, it will update back to the current problematic version (at least that's what we've experienced).

But at least until it is updated again, you can turn off "as the chat app" on the GUI.

Update -- It seems that after signing out and signing back in, machines in my environment are being rolled back. I am not sure if Microsoft actually issued a rollback for Teams, but prior to signing out of of a few affected machines, they were:

    • Client version 49/24021528616, 49/24021528611, or 49/24021528615
    • Outlook presence was not working. Was unable to see Green/Red/Yellow status icon when user is put in To/CC field of an email -- call buttons were disabled in the contact card.
    • The setting "Register the new Teams as the chat app for Microsoft 365 (requires restarting Microsoft 365 applications" was not available in the application
    • Teams would still popup when launching O365 desktop apps.

After signing out and signing back in just Teams:

    • Client version 49/24020205514. This is actually a lower number version, suggesting there was a rollback of some sort.
    • Presence immediately works in Outlook without even having restarted Outlook (I left it open while Teams signed out and back in)
    • Teams now showed the setting "Register the new Teams as the chat app for Microsoft 365 (requires restarting Microsoft 365 applications", and it was checked/enabled
    • Teams no longer pops up when launching O365 desktop apps.

Other observance: It seems that rolling back to this version removed the "dark mode" appearance preference that was set on these machines. It was simple enough to reset that preference, though.

We actually started noticing this client version on Friday of last week (March 22).

I have seen no communication on a rollback from Microsoft myself, but it seems to be what I'm seeing. Time will tell if there is an update and if the problem resurfaces, though....

I can confirm that unistalling Teams and reinstalling it changes this behavior.

I used the Autopilot Reset on alaptop that had the issue and it fixed itself on the other side for the user.

This is a scorthced earth method, and I am looking for an enterprise grade solution that doesn't involve mass registry edits or software reinstalls.
