In new outlook, I have mark emails as read as soon as they are opened. They initially show as read but the number of unread emails doesn't always reduce and if I select show all unread emails most of what I have read show as unread again. This is very frustrating as I then have to open all the emails again on my iphone to mark them as read. I also have an issue with deleting emails in New outlook as they still show as available on the server so do not delete on my other devices.

I have the same problem. It's unusable in its current state. Such basic functionality and such a glaring bug that clearly hasn't been tested properly. Embarrassing from Microsoft on one of their flagship products.
None of the "Message handling" options address the option that I want to use (and, it seems. that others on this thread want): mark as read after user has opened the email. Hovering/selecting or waiting 5 seconds don't actually mean I have read the email. I tried unchecking the box for "Keep unread unless I explicitly mark as read" but that didn't help. Microsoft, why? Please fix this.

The only workaround that I have found to work 100% of the time is:
Every other solution people have proposed has not worked, or if it did, 5% of the time it would partially work. Some emails would remain read, while others would revert back to unread. This new version is completely broken, in my opinion.
This is such a cumbersome workaround for anyone that gets a fair amount of emails each day. It should be a priority one issue for the devs, but I guess not.
I agree. "Legacy Outlook" works very well for me, and much better than the New Outlook, IMO.
