Issues with new outlook not marking emails as read or deleting from server when I delete them

In new outlook, I have mark emails as read as soon as they are opened. They initially show as read but the number of unread emails doesn't always reduce and if I select show all unread emails most of what I have read show as unread again. This is very frustrating as I then have to open all the emails again on my iphone to mark them as read. I also have an issue with deleting emails in New outlook as they still show as available on the server so do not delete on my other devices.

    I really miss this feature too and am switching back to the old Outlook because of it. I also don't like that I can't open a message by pressing enter on the keyboard. In the old outlook, I would press enter to open the message, read it and then hit Esc to close and it would mark it as read. I would like that functionality in the new Outlook.

    On June 12, I sent this to Microsoft Support:

    I was able to determine that if I place the "mark as read" envelope icon on the incoming emails, that works to retain the emails as read. (Settings, Mail, Customize actions, Quick actions.) I also unchecked "In the unread filter, always keep items unread unless I explicitly mark them as read." (Mail, Message handling, Mark as read.) This allows for a single click to mark as read, which is good. This "workaround" should probably be the default.

    HI Fabio - I came across this link having similar issues with "new" Outlook not marking messages as read.

    It seems that Outlook now has a new option to change the "read message" settings which I am not aware existed before. Follow these steps:-

    1. Go to the gear icon in the top right corner, select mail, select "Message handling".
    2. Look at the options for "Mark as read" which can be tweaked.
    3. I found that the default setting on my Outlook was to "Mark displayed items as read after 5 seconds" which I found annoying so have changed.
    4. Make sure the setting matches your preference.

    Mine was on "Mark displayed items as read when the selection changes" by default.

    To anyone looking for exactly what to set it to, I changed mine to "Mark displayed items as read as soon as they're selected" and I also turned off "Always keep items unread unless I explicitly mark them as read [in the unread filter]"

    Same issue with new outlook client.

    Settings: "Mark displayed items as read when the selection changes"

    Reproduce my problem:

    1. view mail in unfiltered view.
    2. Select unread mail
    3. Select another mail. Previous mail is now marked read (all is good).
    4. Set filter to "Unread"
    5. Select unread mail
    6. Select another mail. Previous mail is NOT marked read (fail)
