Gmail app keeps asking for Microsoft account credentials - not able to login

Has anyone resolved this issue? I am just using Gmail on my browser, and it still won't authenticate my outlook account. I'm using POP3.

It does work for a period of time and then stops. Then sometimes starts again, but it's been down now for a week. I've tried using an app password but still no joy.

If anyone has any tips I'd appreciate it!

John - thank you very much for pointing out that the Samsung email app can handle EAS for Hotmail accounts! I hadn't thought of that, but it looks like it works perfectly on my phone (Samsung Galaxy S10e) and gives me what I need. I don't really use my Hotmail account for email, but I rely on it for calendar and contacts.

It's hard to avoid the conclusion you draw, that Google just doesn't want to support EAS access to Hotmail/Outlook because of the competition.

we were all using Basic authentication in the gmail app to talk to our hotmail accounts via activesync. activesync is what an enterprise Microsoft Exchange account would use, including calendar, contacts, etc.

1. _microsoft_ has decided to disable "basic" authentication for hotmail accounts and now requires "modern" authentication. because it's 2024.
2. _google_ has decided (a few years ago) that the only way the gmail app can connect to a hotmail account using modern authentication (by selecting 'outlook, hotmail, or live' when setting up a new account in the gmail app) is via IMAP, not via activesync. imap is an email-only technology invented in 1986. no calendars, no contacts. "modern" indeed.

since we can all see that "exchange" is an option when setting up a new mail account in the gmail app, we know that google knows perfectly well how to get the gmail app to talk to Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync servers using modern authentication. google has to do this, because so many big corporation$ use Exchange ActiveSync. guess what else runs on micrososft exchange activesync servers? hotmail/outlook. all google has to do is one or both of the following:

A. let us choose "exchange" and then put our hotmail addresses in, instead of blocking us and saying "go back and choose outlook, hotmail, or live instead"

B. let the "outlook, hotmail, or live" option" use activesync instead of imap.

pro-tip: the built in email app on every android or apple phone you've had for the past 5-10 years (maybe longer) does B.

but google won't let us do either of these things in the gmail app. google is actively, purposely choosing not to let us use activesync for free hotmail/outlook accounts. because if you're going to be using a free email/contact/calendar service, google wants that service to be their service. not microsoft's service. so the gmail app is going to offer a superior experience with a gmail account than it does with a hotmail account.

It's a ploy to make you use Microsoft Apps... and until the EU or US take action for anti competitive behaviour they are going to hide behind the "security issue".. Bollocks

I still hope that is is not their intention - I mean to disable Contact and Calender Sync.

What is Microsoft doing here - and why is it not reacting about it?
