Gmail app keeps asking for Microsoft account credentials - not able to login

Hi,

Since yesterday (24-01-2024) Gmail app won't sync with my Hotmail account. This email account is my default one, and syncs email, calendar and contacts.

Tried to remove account from devices, restart and add account again (manual configuration).

Server is defined as "m.hotmail.com", port "443", Security "SSL/TLS"

It as two options to proceed:

-"Next" - returns a information to check account data or change to modern authentication

-"modern authentication" - tries to sign on a google page (https://enterprise.google.co./exchangeoauth2rediret...) and returns a message "Can't add your personal email".

This happens both in a basic tablet with android 10 and in a Redmi Note 9 Pro (running stock Miui on Android 12)

What could be causing this? any help tp solve?

Thanks

    Thanks for looking into this!

I have exactly the same problem, I tried several things without any success.

    • Gmail App updated (2024.01.14.599541078)
    • using App Password
    • using several aliases for the server connection (eas.outlook.com, outlook.live.com, outlook.office365.com, m.hotmail.com, etc.)
    • using dns resolved name : ams-efz.ms-acdc.office.com
    • using several dns resoved ip adresses
    • port 443 or 993
    • setting up a complete new outlook.com account, has same problems

    In noted this:

    • IMAP in gmail app syncs fine (email)
    • installed outlook app for Android, syncs fine (email, contacts, calendar)
    • all known aliases for the server name are resolving to the same dns name: ams-efz.ms-acdc.office.com
    • using ip addresses instead of server name give slightly different error message: There was an error, please try again
    • gmail app is only asking for a "server", not "incoming server"

-- account administration in Android says:

---- last sync contacts : Feb 3rd 02:51 (!) despite all errors given. Corresponds to the the further details from "S. Rousselle" in this thread.

    ---- last sync email: Jan 28th 13:45

    ---- last sync calendar: Jan 27th 14:22

-- mobile devices details in outlook.com says:

    ---- last sync: Jan 27th 15:12

    ---- user agent Android-Mail/2023.12.31.599526178.Release

Thanks to you and all the other people here to find a solution.

    Similar issue but slightly different.

Two different android devices, one much older S2 Tab (Samsung) and a Pixel 7a. Second device didn't have the account on it until I started to troubleshoot.
Exchange\O365 Email account stopped syncing this week on the S2, I have seen the info about that already.
Account is part of a group that bypasses 2FA due to a very specific use case.

Trying to delete \ re-add the account wasn't at first successful earlier this week (possibly due to the MS issue) once it was it can usually send/receive on the first sync and then it won't sync.

Adding the same account to the Pixel has the same behaviour, first sync then nothing.
Both app versions for the Gmail client are the same so I suspect auto-update is on, 2024.01.14.599541078.release
Haven't had a chance to try roll back Gmail client.

More testing adding the Outlook official app on the Pixel and sadly its working perfectly fine so far (only been an hour).
Unsure if this is MS doing things intentionally or a ball drop from Google.

Two-step enabled, using app password - still having same problem. Not fixed!

Same here, I had the app password enabled and working, but in the last weeks I have been "kicked out"

Tried to delete and readd and since then I'm not able to get my email address in Gmail app.

A couple of days later it started to give the same issue with another account without the 2 step and the app password

    Hello Everyone,

We truly appreciate your collaboration and understanding on this matter.

As per checking onto this, there was an issue on the Outlook.com server authentication where emails apps connecting to POP, IMAP, or Exchange connections are being prompted to enter credentials, here the support article for reference: Outlook and other apps are unable to connect to Outlook.com.

If you are still having the same issue, we highly suggest creating an app password for your mail applications. Using app passwords with apps that don't support two-step verification

    I hope this information helps!

    Hello,

Thank you for posting here in Microsoft Community.

Basing on your description you are unable to connect to the Outlook.com server using the Gmail application on your phone and other mobile devices. I'd be more than glad to assist you on this, for me to have a better view of your concern, I'd like to ask few details:

    • What is the Gmail app version are you using?
    • Are you able to login on to https://outlook.live.com using the account?
    • Have you tried using another email client such as Outlook application, does it have the same issue as well?

Here are troubleshooting steps I can suggest:

    1. Verify if you are able to login on the webmail https://outlook.live.com.
    2. Try to reset your password for that Hotmail account as possible it's a credential issue.
    3.  Visit Mail - Outlook (live.com) check the status of the devices connected to your Hotmail account, you can also refresh it from there by clicking the cycle arrow icon. If the status is other than "OK" you can try to remove it then set-up the Hotmail account again on Gmail.
    4. Try to add the account on the Outlook.com and Hotmail.com configuration instead of Microsoft Exchange. If not you can also try to set it up as IMAP then use this configuration: POP, IMAP, and SMTP settings for Outlook.com - Microsoft Support (Note: IMAP configuration only syncs email items.

I hope this information helps! Please let me know if you need further assistance, I'd be more than glad to assist you on it.

    Regards,

    Arquel C.
