How can I open an attachment without downloading it on new Outlook?

Before I switched to new outlook, I was able to double click on attachments and they would open to their specific apps. Ex. If it was a PDF it would open with Acrobat; If it was a word doc, it would open with word. Now I have to click the download button and it default saves to my downloads folder instead of being put where I want it in the beginning. I also can't drag attachments from an email to the specific folder I want to save it to on my desktop. I have to download and then move it from my downloads folder.

I know it's probably just a new process I'll have to get used to, but hey maybe someone knows a hack!

Thank you in advance :)

Nearly 10 months later and this is still an issue. Glad I have never switched was just trying to help a coworker that has a new laptop setup trying to just open a VM attachment that comes into their email and they can only download it or save it. Pretty retrogressive and a shame that even after this long string of comments there has been not one comment from Microsoft for over half a year let alone a resolution on the issue.

    Melissa,

This example you gave on how to open without downloading is not true. We do not have that option only Copy, download or remove attachment there is no preview option. This is killing my business wasting tons of time, we cannot even open an attachment without downloading it. I really wish we could go back to the old outlook. If there was another company I would move away from outlook its terrible now.

What are you all talking about? Do you mean Mail and Calendar app (Windows 10 and 11)? Outlook (new) replaces Mail and Calendar app. What's old outlook? Is that a paid version of Outlook for desktop that comes with Office suite or as a standalone paid app?
