While I believe I understand some of the reasoning behind the marginally improved "New" Outlook while lamenting the overall deprecated experience - namely, an effort to normalize the look and feel across the desktop, mobile and web versions - the path taken is regressive in nature, at least for those of us who've long relied upon the desktop variant to manage much of their eMail, task and scheduling affairs.
I've been comfortable with the working knowledge that detailed work associated with eMail, tasks and scheduling has been the province of the desktop client, while the mobile and web versions offered very functional and not as detailed abilities.
Now, after having lived with the "new" Outlook desktop client for months now, I can conclude that the 'improvements' to this client when compared to its current and soon former versions is far less capable and far more mobile/web like in function - overall, a deprecated experience.
One notable issue is the mere fact that one can seemingly no longer remove attachments directly from an eMail. While this may seem trivial to some, having attachments to eMail AND the ability to download same simply increases the already arduous task of managing one's documents, while increasing the overall storage footprint (since these could now be stored in at least two places), which could represent increased subscription costs over time.
Microsoft, PLEASE revisit this intended direction for the desktop client, and instead consider introducing some of the long-favored desktop client functions into the mobile and web variants, in turn genuinely introducing "new" functionality all around.
Using New Outlook on Windows for personal email, calendar, and contact management

I don't understand how the developers are so clueless and bad at their jobs. Outlook used to be fine and easy to use.
Because developers are developers and not end users in the same sense as we use Outlook. They must use their own tools in house so I don't understand how Microsoft management have even allowed this to see the light of day in the first place, they must be allowed to give feedback. Outlook is such a critical tool to users integrating Calendars, emails, contacts etc, there is no room for error.
I'm a developer myself and if I made such a fundamental change to the applications I write without consultation we would have some very dirty fans in the office.
It beggars belief that this dross will soon be forced upon us whether we like it or not.
It took me many years to get my head around old outlook, but once i did, i realised how useful it can be. I can see that new outlook is made to be simpler, but by making it simpler, they have completely removed its flexibility and functionality. I'm upset about the loss of seeing my events in a list, as well as the way you could just drag and drop events and emails from one folder to another. It's now feeling impossible to efficiently organise and categorise my emails and events. Since without the list function, i cant grab a group of events and change thee category at once.
I'm sure i also used to be able to flag an email from any of my addresses and they would all end up in one list, but now that its integrated with ToDo, it now functions like ToDo, and the major drawback to that app is it treats all email addresses as separate accounts and so i cant see all my flagged emails, from all my addresses in one list. In fact i must be missing something here because this doesn't make sense. I cant see a list of flagged emails from the Gmails accounts which I'm logged into on Outlook. Where can i find them? They must be somewhere otherwise you surely wouldn't be able to flag them. It appears as though I have to visit each email address separately and check each for flagged messages, where as before, it was all essentially one task list.
New Outlook is tedious, unecessarily regressive as you put it. One simple function which I used on classic Outlook which is no longer available is to move emails between accounts. I have several and am no longer able to move an email from one account to another. I am also unable to revert to classic Outlook. I don't use, nor do I wish to use one Drive.
I've lost a morning on this only to realize the new Outlook is not what it used to be. How very disappointing.

I am a multilingual user of Outlook, typing with roman letters and 3 other scriptural systems. The "New" outlook is a disaster for a user like me.
A lot of functions have disappeared.
It seems it was designed by US people, for US people, with their very limited understanding of the rest of the world...
The same problem occured with MSTeams. The "classic" version was very well designed, and we got used to it. It was taking account of all practices and cultures. The "new" version suddenly focused on US ways and manners only.
If ever MS was to phase out the classic version, I would phase out MS, simply.
