I use the new version of outlook. The drop down menu for attachments, suggests three files; none is the most recent file used/saved. I have to go into my word documents folders, find the file, and open it to attach it to an email. How can I get the drop down menu of suggested files to display my most recently worked on file?

Honestly, I am not surprised at all. As soon as I saw the new Outlook, my brain said "what's the bet that the 'new' version is missing useful features from the old version?" Sure enough, the "attach files" button is far less useful than it used to be. Hopefully they will fix it before phasing out the older version.
This issue has also impacted my work flow. When multiple departments are editing and sharing documents, the "recent" files is a much more relevant pool for a drop down menu than "suggested" files. I have switched back to the old version. Staying posted for any solution to this issue.
This is a horrible problem. It was so convenient to how the "attach" worked before, now it takes much more time because you have to search for the document or file, the most recent simply does not come right up. Again, it worked splendidly before, this revision has taken a very poor, and time wasting, step backwards. Is there going to be an actual fix to this?
I use Outlook 16.86 for Mac. I don't see the point in the new, intermittent drop-down menu, which is only giving the options "Browse this Mac", the cloud, and "Insert link" (if I wanted to do that, I would have pressed that button and not "attach") and offers a list of random old (Microsoft-only) files I once attached. Just provide a browser window with a drop-down of recent files (of all types)?!
- Use Recent Items: If the file you're looking for is a recent item, you can access it directly from the "Recent Items" list within Outlook. Click on the "Attach" button in the email composition window, then select "Recent Items" from the dropdown menu. This should display a list of files that you've recently accessed or opened.
We don't have "Recent Items" under Insert>Attach file, we only have "Suggested files" and this is what we're all complaining about. I saved a file a few minutes before trying to reply to this email and it's not suggested. I'd say 95% of the time I want to email a file that I just created.
