Forced to use New Outlook wiped my entire calendar, can I get it back? Can the tray icon clock calendar be connected to New Outlook?

For years I used the tray icon clock to open a calendar. It looked like this (except Save & More Details were not greyed out).

Clicking a date I could fill out "Add an event or reminder", add a time and location.

Jan 10 2024 "New Outlook" auto imposed itself. It insisted I give it an email address or it wouldn't play ball. I gave it my MS-account email (that happen to be an gmail account). I imagined Outlook would copy all the old calendar items. It didn't. New Outlook was blank.

I was going to start using Outlook before it forced me. Not because I wanted to but because it seemed, after searching for years, that is the only possible way to make a calendar backup.

I believe I clicked Add calendar --> edit my calendar (New Outlook) trying to find a way to make my calendar entries appear when suddenly all my calendar entries where gone. They never appeared in New Outlook and were gone from the tray icon clock as well.

I can add new entries to New Outlook and I noticed they appear in my gmail account (calendar) as well.

I've more or less given up retrieving my old calendar entries. Thankfully I don't really need them. Searching this community for tips I looked in New Outlook "Deleted items". It's empty.

Now the tray icon clock calendar isn't only empty, the "Save" and "More details" are both greyed out. Is there a way to restore the convenience of the old functionality. Meaning I can add items via the tray icon clock again? I also have a vague hope if this is restored all my old entries will reappear.

    Hi Irather,

Thanks for writing us here in Microsoft Community.

It's unfortunate that you've lost you important stuff. I understand the frustration you’re experiencing with the transition to New Outlook and the unexpected loss of your old calendar entries. Allow me to help in any way I can. Let's work on this together as a team.

Before we proceed, Irather, it's oimportant to note that Microsoft has limited resources involving data loss because they may be caused by uncontrollable factors such as file corruption. Nevertheless, I will walk you through some steps in potentially locating or recovering the data you are contacting us about. Should they still be present on your machine, I assure you that we can recover them; however, should it be otherwise, the least I could do is to provide you some pieces of advice in preventing such predicament from happening again.

I would like to ask you the following.

    1. May I know what version of Outlook do have originally? Was it the one that is part of Microsoft 365 suite, or are you using the Windows Mail app perhaps?
    • The reason I ask is that the upgraded version of Mail app is the New Outlook for Windows app, and the interface is completely the same to the new version of Outlook is part of Microsoft 365.
    1. To confirm, you are usually putting your calendar entries on the built-in calendar app and not within Outlook app?
    2. Can you go to your control panel and check for Microsoft Office installed?
    • This is to confirm if you indeed have Microsoft Office installed.
    • To access control panel, press Windows key + R*, type* appwizz.cpl then press enter.

Let’s try the following ways to check.

    1. Search for Outlook. Seach the word Outlook on your Search menu, and check if you can find 2 results. If you can, try to open each one and head to calendar section to check. See if you can find your calendar there.
    2. Roll back to Classic version. This option is available if you are using Outlook that is part of Microsoft 365 suite. If in case you are using the Outlook app from the upgraded version of Mail app, I'm afraid this step I am going to provide is not suitable.
    1. Restoring Old Calendar Entries:
    • Unfortunately, if your old calendar entries were not synced or backed up before the transition, it might be challenging to retrieve them.
    • However, you’ve taken the right steps by checking the Deleted Items in New Outlook and exploring other options.
    1. Connecting Tray Icon Clock Calendar to New Outlook:
    • The tray icon clock calendar (often associated with the Windows taskbar) is separate from New Outlook.
    • As of now, there is no direct way to sync the taskbar calendar with New Outlook.
    • The taskbar calendar typically syncs with the Windows Calendar app, not New Outlook.
    • The “Save” and “More details” being greyed out might be due to the disconnection between these two systems.
    1. Recovering Old Entries:
    • If you ever find a way to retrieve your old calendar entries (perhaps through backups or other means), they might reappear in New Outlook once synced.
    1. Possible Workaround:
    • While you can’t directly connect the taskbar calendar to New Outlook, consider using the Windows Calendar app as an intermediary:
      • Open the Windows Calendar app (search for it in the Start menu).
      • Add your events there, and they should sync with your Gmail account (since you’ve noticed that New Outlook entries appear in your Gmail calendar).
      • This way, you can still have a convenient way to add items via the tray icon clock calendar.

I would also like to tell you that New Outlook is still in its infancy and further development and enhancement of the features, and functions are still on its way based on the initial user's feedback. You are now officially part of those preview testers in New Outlook. We encourage you to share your thoughts and feedback to our developers via the Outlook Feedback Portal · Community (microsoft.com). This way they can be aware on what points that need to be worked on with New Outlook. They might be able to look into it and find ways to include in the next updates.

These are the information and troubleshooting steps we can share with you today, Irather! If you can provide to me some screenshots or answers to our questions, that is much appreciated and a huge help.

    Sincerely,

    Froilance T.

Found "Windows Calendar app" and started it. Borrowed Wikipedia pic.

    [![Image](https://learn-attachment.microsoft.com/api/attachments/25751dd9-467c-493f-af41-c7883b7c4df6?platform=QnA "filestore.community.support.microsoft.com")

By adding one entry (in Win Cal app) it shows up in tray-icon-calendar and **SAVE** grey-out went away. All my old entries are back in the tray icon clock calendar and some, not all, in "Windows Calendar app".

Got all back into "Windows Calendar app" by clicking every entry since I last reinstalled Win 10 (mid 2022). Most efficient way through all dates **Right-Arrow + Enter**, repeat ~ 600 times. Every day with entry, click each (if multiple) entry to make it show up in "Windows Calendar app".

Entries does not show up in "New Outlook" nor do they show up in coupled gmail calendar (= Microsoft account). Seems I'm back to before all tray-icon-clock entries went away.

I'd love to back the Windows Calendar up. Is there any way? I searched for years and all answers say there isn't. The only way I've found is to use the print option, month by month. This gives all the daily entry headlines (some truncated) for each month. No details of time or location. Printing not to paper but to either PDF or MS XPS document writer. Preferably PDF I just discovered because it gives text not image output. Horizontal, largest "paper" width for minimum truncation.

I access the print option via the three dots (see pic above). The three dots opens two options:

    a) Print out.

    b) Synchronize

I dare not touch "synchronize" because I don't know what will happen.

Synchronize with what? Or from what?

Pic above shows "**Microsoft Account**" and immediately a checked check mark for "**Calendar**". If I uncheck it my entries go away. Rechecking and they're back.

What does that mean? It doesn't mean my calendar entries shows up in the gmail account that is my Microsoft Account because they don't.

I read that Windows Calendar app will not be supported beyond Dec. 31 2024. So that's the time i have to find a way to backup.

    Hi Irather,

Thanks for writing us back. My apologies for the delayed response. If you wish to go back to the classic version of Windows Calendar app, you have to revert the Outlook New. However, please understand that this is not a long-term solution as Mail app of Calendar will be soon replaced with Outlook New, and your research is correct. Below are the helpful resources that will guide you:

    1. How to revert back to mail from new outlook - Microsoft Community Hub
    2. How to switch back to Windows 10 Mail App from Outlook? - Microsoft Community
    3. Toggling out of the new Outlook for Windows preview - Microsoft Support

Here are some information I can provide based on your questions.

    1. Synchronizing with Your Microsoft Account:
    • When you see the option to synchronize, it refers to syncing your calendar data with your Microsoft Account (associated with your Windows 10 installation).
    • By keeping the “Microsoft Account” option checked, your calendar entries remain associated with your account.
    • However, this doesn’t mean they’ll automatically appear in your Gmail account. The synchronization is specific to Microsoft services.
    • If you uncheck it, your entries may disappear from the Windows Calendar app.
    • Unfortunately, I'm afraid there is no option to export calendars from the Windows 10 Calendar app.

Let me know if you have question or clarifications and I would be more than happy to address it on my next response.

    Sincerely,

    Froilance T.

Hi IratherLINUX, the new Outlook app hasn't wiped out your calendar entries, it just hasn't synched them because the functionality needed to do this is not yet available. I spoke with the Microsoft Team via chat just now who advise me the new Outlook app was released 'Under Developed' which in Microsoft terms means it is not yet fully functional. At this stage, full support for IMAP (what google mail uses) has not been released because this aspect is still in development. Like you, I use a Gmail email address to access outlook.com and Windows mail presently which means my calendar entries do not appear in the new Outlook app either, they won't until enhancements for IMAP are deployed in the coming months. I did ask when deployment would occur but the consultant could not provide a data because this is not yet forthcoming from the developer.
