Hi I have a problem where my personal email gets a login prompt after opening the outlook (2016 office version 16.0.5426.1000) and useing it for about 5 minutes. Hoewer my work email has no problems on the same app and the same PC. The difference is that my work email is company hosted and my personal is hosted on live.com by microsoft.

Both my accounts use microsoft exchange.

    I agreed the problem seems to be affecting nearly all versions of Outlook for Windows. 2016, 2019, 2021 and Outlook 365 so I am not going to waste my time and upgrade to a newer version of Outlook. The outlook password program for me started around 1/30/2024 and is still happening. On 2/13/2024 Microsoft released KB5002543 which obviously did NOT fix the issue. Has anyone tried installing a virgin copy of Outlook for windows (any version) without all of the KB patches? I know that;s a time consuming process. Just wondering if the issue is a KB patch issue?? Thanks!

    Sounds like you've gone above & beyond in testing to troubleshoot this problem. - Thanks for the detailed writeup and sharing your experience so far.

    I've been seeing the constant password prompt across multiple 'outlook.com' accounts in use with both Outlook 2016 & 2019 desktop clients.

    Clearing entries referencing the email account in Windows Credentials Manager & creating a new Outlook profile appeared to temporarily alleviate the issue on some of these accounts. However the issue would then reocurr several days later.

    Ultimately resetting/changing the password seems to have been more successful, but I'm still intermittently seeing the authentication prompt despite entering the correct password (works without issue via OWA in the browser). Weirdly when this happens the inbox will sometimes still sync in the background even though the "Needs a password" status can be seen on the exchange connection info at the bottom of the window.

    I've also enabled "Troubleshooting Logging" under the Advanced Outlook settings which has helped diagnose past issues. Unfortunately with this particular problem the logs don't list any evident errors; I'm ultimately convinced this is a problem on Microsoft's end. Especially with numerous email accounts experiencing the same issue in a roughly similar time period!

    I considered the route of enabling 2-step verification using App passwords instead, but it sounds like you were still seeing the same issue despite having this enabled.

    • Edit- Today it only took 1,5 hour(insteqad of 5) to get the app password to be accepted.

    Following! I have exactly the same issues. App password everyday but it takes about 5 hours from resetting the app password until Outlook 2016 accepts it. Hotmail account in my case. I do not wan't to turn off 2fa and the free apps are not comparable to then full Outlook version for me.

    I tried all of the tricks I could find and nothing makes one difference. 0 or 1 values, just the same thing everyday. No difference. And I probably tried a lot more more. My issue started about a year ago but it was once in a while at first. Now it's everyday. Also, It was able to accept a new app password at once. Now it takes many hours to do so. But it will eventualy...

    Some of the steps i took:

    • Reinstalled office 2016
    • Credential manager in Control Panel
    • New OST
    • SaRa
    • Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00:

     [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\Identity]

    "EnableADAL"=dword:00000001

    "Version"=dword:00000001

    "DisableADALatopWAMOverride"=dword:0000001

    "DisableADALForExtendedApps"=dword:0000001

    "DisableADALSetSilentAuth"=dword:0000001

    "Mso99lUpdatedForADALExtendedApps"=dword:0000001

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Exchange]

    "AlwaysUseMSOAuthForAutoDiscover"=dword:00000001

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\AutoDiscover]

    "ExcludeExplicitO365Endpoint"=dword:00000001
