New outlook for Windows not syncing read/unread status of emails

Hello,

In the new Outlook for Windows, the experience is generally good except for an issue where emails read in it still appear as unread when viewed in a different client, like the Outlook desktop app or the iPhone mail app. Any ideas why? Has anyone else experienced this?

To reproduce:

  1. Open your Outlook for Windows and another client (e.g . Gmail)
  2. Find a read email in the alternate client and mark it as unread
  3. New outlook for Windows will update after ~10 seconds displaying the unread status - this is GOOD
  4. Now try doing this the opposite way around - both marking an email as read or unread within the new Outlook for Windows doesn't sync to the actual mail server. It does maintain this unread state within the Outlook for Windows even after closing however.

It's annoying because if I go through my emails on my computer, then look at them later on my phone, it still shows all emails as unread.

Edit 28th Feb 2024: I have unmarked this as resolved because there are clearly many people with later versions who still experience this issue. Please sort this out Microsoft - it's incredibly annoying.

    I have tried the new outlook a few times and now just about given up hope that it will match old outlook in stability. It hangs often its slow on a I7 laptop. Moving back to old outlook I noticed that items marked as unread and read is not syncing to the old outlook, Its been a day and still waiting for the sync to get a grip. I like the new outlook, I just hate it being substandard. Not a single person in my IT deparment wants to use it and dread the day when this is forced.

    Looks like this has finally been fixed as of today. Now I can use New Outlook as my default email client.

    I started using Thunderbird as well but the font is too small and my eyesight isn't the best. But, other than that, it works great.

    Hi

    I totally gave up on Outlook and switched to Thunderbird. Never looked back. Both mail and calendar working fine. I have both outlook and iCloud accounts and is very satisfied. Thunderbird is also cross platform, so when I eventually install Linux, I will have the same mail client. Microsoft is doing a very good job chasing customers away

    Here it is August 2024 and the old Outlook is going away leaving us with the new Outlook which doesn't sync correctly with IMAP. My issue is that when I read messages in the new Outlook, they are not marked as read in my Google IMAP e-mail on the web. Interestingly, if I read an e-mail online in my GMail account, then it DOES mark it as read in the new Outlook.

    I would think this would be a simple fix but no one at Microsoft seems to care.
