Add IMAP email on the recent outlook new 2023 doesn't work

Hi everyone !

I have a persistent technical issue to use the recent "New outlook" on December 2023.
When I want to add an account via IMAP, I keep getting the same error at the end (or sometimes another) like "An error has occurred while configuring this account. Please try again. You may need an application password.". I use a lot of business accounts via IMAP and none of them work on new outlook. On the old Windows mail system, I tried to add my new business account with the same identifiers and it worked.

I also have the same problem adding a google account. I have double authentication that launches with authorization to confirm. But when I click on "Open Outlook (new)" by dialog, I get the error "Your organization does not authorize the addition of personal accounts in Outlook".

Would you please have a solution? For the moment I'm reverting to the old windows mail but it's a pity because ergonomically the new outlook is much better.

I'll be grateful.

Thanks a lot!

Good day! Thank for your reply!

Currently, 3rd party account(Gmail, Yahoo!, iCloud and other IMAP account) is still in development which means that it is not fully supported yet. For some kind of IMAP accounts, you may not add them to New Outlook successfully. You may check this Microsoft article and try to set up your email account in New Outlook.

Add an email account to Outlook

**Note:**Some third-party email providers, like Gmail, Yahoo, and iCloud, require you to change some settings on their websites before you can add these accounts to New Outlook.

*Coming soon

**Supported in Outlook for Windows through theTo-Do Bar

***With limited capabilities

For my suggestion, you may keep monitoring Microsoft Roadmapand submit your Feedback to help us improve the product as well. And the development team will check your suggestion there and may consider to develop it in advance. We would think highly of each customer’s feedback on our product, and we appreciate for your precious suggestion on how we could improve our products.

Your understanding and patience will be appreciated.

Thank you!

Hello Auriane GS,

Thank you for posting this case in Microsoft Community!

Based your description: Add IMAP email on the recent outlook new 2023 doesn't work. I would like to cooperate with you working on this case. To clarify this case, what kind of IMAP email account do you try to add in New Outlook for Windows? Currently, 3rd party account(Gmail, Yahoo!, iCloud and other IMAP account) is in development status which means that you may not add IMAP account in New Outlook from your organization. If you could not add your Gmail account yet, please be patient as we roll this out to people worldwide. Users will see a call out when the ability to add a Gmail account is available for them. You may check following Microsoft article as reference:

I replied to this post on February 24, 2024, but have not seen any response from Microsoft support about my concern.

You indicated that IMAP support in the New Outlook was still a work in progress, so my point is that it is very important to users that Microsoft continue to support the Mail app on existing computers until the New Outlook works for all the IMAP accounts as well as it did in Mail and the older Outlooks.

How can we escalate this concern to Microsoft management and get a response as to when such support will be available?

Responses to my earlier post indicate that others are still having the same problem, and some are suggesting going to a third-party mail client like Thunderbird. Moreover, I have had no problem getting my email to work on my Apple IPad and IPhone by simply entering the IMAP parameters. It would be ridiculous if long-time Windows users were unable to do the same thing from their PCs.

I see this is still a very active post.

As a small email hosting company, just for our business customers who do not wish to move over to O365 Exchange, I ran a test from the New Outlook.

Tried to add an email account hosted on our server, which of course failed. So I then looked at the logs on our email hosting server to see if I could see any failed IMAP logon attempts for the account I was using, there were no logon attempts found.

This leaves me to believe that:

    1. Outlook NEW is not finding the IMAP server
    2. Outlook NEW is not even attempting to connect to the IMAP server
    3. The network protection on the server is blocking the IP addresses used by Outlook NEW to synchronise. Unlike older email clients is it a Microsoft server trying to connect to the mail server rather than the client's IP address so it can sync to the Microsoft cloud? This will require more investigation.

Sorry I do not have an answer but I'll do some more digging and post on here if I find anything else out.

Adding to the ongoing confusion regards the New Outlook app is the fact that when I queried if I had to install it when it eventually rolls out ( I use Windows 10) I was informed that I wouldn't need to comply with the installation. It now appears that the info I was given by Bing may not infact be accurate.

I am constantly being 'reminded' when I open my Mail & Calendar app, that New Outlook is arriving and I should be ready to install it.

I feel that Microsoft have been very quiet on this topic and feel that they really need to come out and disclose if you really need to install the New Outlook app, or if you can still stick to Mail & Calendar?

One of the more curious responses i received was that you could have the two email apps (Mail & Calendar, New Outlook ) actually operating side by side and you would be able to select which one you preferred to use for certain email accounts.

This info is very confusing to people such as myself who are not exactly 'tech-savvy'

I can obviously use my laptop for everyday operations, but would never class myself as a confident user.

All this talk of IMAP etc flew right over my head and I actually felt that I was out of my depth until I asked a few questions of Bing. Sadly the answers I received have only added to the confusion over the forthcoming New Outlook roll-out.
