Add IMAP email on the recent outlook new 2023 doesn't work

Hi everyone !

I have a persistent technical issue to use the recent "New outlook" on December 2023.
When I want to add an account via IMAP, I keep getting the same error at the end (or sometimes another) like "An error has occurred while configuring this account. Please try again. You may need an application password.". I use a lot of business accounts via IMAP and none of them work on new outlook. On the old Windows mail system, I tried to add my new business account with the same identifiers and it worked.

I also have the same problem adding a google account. I have double authentication that launches with authorization to confirm. But when I click on "Open Outlook (new)" by dialog, I get the error "Your organization does not authorize the addition of personal accounts in Outlook".

Would you please have a solution? For the moment I'm reverting to the old windows mail but it's a pity because ergonomically the new outlook is much better.

I'll be grateful.

Thanks a lot!

Good day! Thank for your reply!

Currently, 3rd party account(Gmail, Yahoo!, iCloud and other IMAP account) is still in development which means that it is not fully supported yet. For some kind of IMAP accounts, you may not add them to New Outlook successfully. You may check this Microsoft article and try to set up your email account in New Outlook.

Add an email account to Outlook

**Note:**Some third-party email providers, like Gmail, Yahoo, and iCloud, require you to change some settings on their websites before you can add these accounts to New Outlook.

*Coming soon

**Supported in Outlook for Windows through theTo-Do Bar

***With limited capabilities

For my suggestion, you may keep monitoring Microsoft Roadmapand submit your Feedback to help us improve the product as well. And the development team will check your suggestion there and may consider to develop it in advance. We would think highly of each customer’s feedback on our product, and we appreciate for your precious suggestion on how we could improve our products.

Your understanding and patience will be appreciated.

Thank you!

Exactly the problem I had. Ultimately I decided to uninstall New Outlook and go back to mail/calendar app.

My fear is that we might all be forced to ditch mail.calendar and signup for New Outlook.

Until they sort out the IMAP question I will be staying where I am.

I can't believe that the developers of New Outlook totally neglected those of us that have and use old email accounts using SMTP.

I should add that the incoming mail is set up with pop3 and outgoing with SMTP. You would have thought that a newer outlook would have had all the functionality of the old one, plus more, but if it can't seamlessly integrate people's old setups into the new, then it's not really fit for purpose. If it continues to be problematic I will probably try Thunderbird or something similar.

This is where it gets confusing. The data I read on the Bing suggested that Windows 11 and 10 email users would be migrating over to use the New Outlook app. When I asked a more detailed question it came back saying that Mail & Calendar users would still be able to use the old app.

It also suggested that you could use the old Mail app alongside the New Outlook app.

    So far, so confused.

I have just asked how to get the IMAP data that is being requested for the email accounts that can't be set up or haven't automatically migrated.

    Open Mail & Calendar

    Click on settings

Select accounts ( suggest you don't then need to click on settings)

Choose the email account for which you want to find the settings

Under the account details, look foe Server Settings. Here you will find the following information

Incoming Mail Server (IMAP) this is the server address for receiving emails via IMAP (Doh!)

Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) This is the server address for sending emails via SMTP ( Doh! again)

    Hope this helps.
