Add IMAP email on the recent outlook new 2023 doesn't work

Hi everyone !

I have a persistent technical issue to use the recent "New outlook" on December 2023.
When I want to add an account via IMAP, I keep getting the same error at the end (or sometimes another) like "An error has occurred while configuring this account. Please try again. You may need an application password.". I use a lot of business accounts via IMAP and none of them work on new outlook. On the old Windows mail system, I tried to add my new business account with the same identifiers and it worked.

I also have the same problem adding a google account. I have double authentication that launches with authorization to confirm. But when I click on "Open Outlook (new)" by dialog, I get the error "Your organization does not authorize the addition of personal accounts in Outlook".

Would you please have a solution? For the moment I'm reverting to the old windows mail but it's a pity because ergonomically the new outlook is much better.

Currently, 3rd party account(Gmail, Yahoo!, iCloud and other IMAP account) is still in development which means that it is not fully supported yet. For some kind of IMAP accounts, you may not add them to New Outlook successfully. You may check this Microsoft article and try to set up your email account in New Outlook.

**Note:**Some third-party email providers, like Gmail, Yahoo, and iCloud, require you to change some settings on their websites before you can add these accounts to New Outlook.

To clarify this case, what kind of IMAP email account do you try to add in New Outlook for Windows? Currently, 3rd party account(Gmail, Yahoo!, iCloud and other IMAP account) is in development status which means that you may not add IMAP account in New Outlook from your organization. If you could not add your Gmail account yet, please be patient as we roll this out to people worldwide. Users will see a call out when the ability to add a Gmail account is available for them.     I got it to work by accident. I had been looking for email programs I could use to replace my aging Opera Mail which hasn't been updated since 2013....what was I thinking? https://help.opera.com/en/operas-archived-history/ I noticed that some browsers (Vivaldi which is Chrome based and SeaMonkey which is Mozilla based) are both offering email programs. So I tried the Vivaldi Chrome based browser and feeling ridiculously lucky, entered my Hotmail username and password and low and behold all my email poured in. I almost passed out in shock. I'm not used to writing anything positive here! A pleasant change.

    Did any of you try the Mozilla Thunderbird email program and if so, what did you think of it? I haven't used it for several years and found it kind of awkward but that was probably my fault for not learning it better. I've often found Mozilla makes very odd design choices and Thunderbird seemed just plain awkward. Mozilla has a habit of making strange design choices that often ignore convention for no apparent reasons. Like to be different. I do love their Firefox browser though. It just offers so much more control than any Chrome based browser though CCleaner is a pretty good Chrome based one. Google Chrome is the absolute worst of them.

    Of course it was done without the interference of Microsoft, hence my success. The reason it worked is it did what needed to be done automatically, like that secondary password Microsoft has injected into the mix to increase security. As Vivaldi is updated all the time they've incorporated that secondary security into their email system.

    So check to see if the browser you're using has email. Why have a separate email program running? Email programs come and are much flakier than browsers and often go a long time between updates whereas browsers tend to be around longer and they tend to be updated often. This is probably the email solution for free email in 2024.

    Software companies know that the key to income is subscription fees. We all pay way more for something by the month than a one time payment. It's just our limited human psychology. Influencers online know this and first sell an ebook, then a course, then a subscription program. It's always the most lucrative. In fairness to Microsoft they have been hacked a lot over the years and so many people use their OS for free so this is their way of ensuring that doesn't happen. It's a balancing act between pissing off their customers and revenue. They know if they alienate people they'll lose more to MacOS and Linux and as you can run MacOS on PC hardware (especially on AMD CPU's/motherboards where it's easier to install) without paying the Apple hardware tax, this is even more of a problem. They probably are aiming to get a lot of people on board with low priced subscriptions then will insist on the OS being subscribe only in the future after more market acceptance. Linux and MacOS never looked so good. But if this works for Microsoft Apple is sure to follow. Linux will be our only island of free OS use.

    As you suggested, I did look at the instructions on Bing. They did not help because they took me to the same Advanced Settings menu that I have tried to make work for months. Then, they say that if the connections fails, you will need the assistance from your service provider or IT administrator which I don't have because this is a family email server that we have been using for many, many years.

    As I pointed out, I have always been able to make the account work in Mail, the old Outlook in Windows 7, and in Apple products like IPhone and IPad by entering the server information and password the same way I have been trying to do in the New Outlook. The problem seems to be when it tries to sync the account with the Microsoft cloud. I suspect that my server and a lot of the older IMAP servers are not set up to do this kind of syncing.

    What I am asking is that Microsoft provide basic IMAP support for servers like ours in the New Outlook that works the same way that it does in the Mail app that it is replacing before they take that away from us.

    I can continue to use the Mail app on my current computer, but it won't be available on any new ones that I would want to buy for me or my family members. It would be ridiculous to go to our IPhones or IPads to access our mail because we can't on a Windows PC.

    As I stated earlier I was able to get my queries answered regards New Outlook.Just ask Bing about IMAP and where to find it on Mail & Calendar and it is then a breeze to input the info into the New Outlook app.

    Saying that, the new Outlook app isn't exactly user friendly. The developers apparently have taken a step or two backwards with this 'new' app and have neglected to automatically include all of your email accounts when you move over to use Outlook, The biggest issue being the questions regarding IMAP and where to locate the information about it.
