Add IMAP email on the recent outlook new 2023 doesn't work

Hi everyone !

I have a persistent technical issue to use the recent "New outlook" on December 2023.
When I want to add an account via IMAP, I keep getting the same error at the end (or sometimes another) like "An error has occurred while configuring this account. Please try again. You may need an application password.". I use a lot of business accounts via IMAP and none of them work on new outlook. On the old Windows mail system, I tried to add my new business account with the same identifiers and it worked.

I also have the same problem adding a google account. I have double authentication that launches with authorization to confirm. But when I click on "Open Outlook (new)" by dialog, I get the error "Your organization does not authorize the addition of personal accounts in Outlook".

Would you please have a solution? For the moment I'm reverting to the old windows mail but it's a pity because ergonomically the new outlook is much better.

I'll be grateful.

Thanks a lot!

Good day! Thank for your reply!

Currently, 3rd party account(Gmail, Yahoo!, iCloud and other IMAP account) is still in development which means that it is not fully supported yet. For some kind of IMAP accounts, you may not add them to New Outlook successfully. You may check this Microsoft article and try to set up your email account in New Outlook.

Add an email account to Outlook

**Note:**Some third-party email providers, like Gmail, Yahoo, and iCloud, require you to change some settings on their websites before you can add these accounts to New Outlook.

*Coming soon

**Supported in Outlook for Windows through theTo-Do Bar

***With limited capabilities

For my suggestion, you may keep monitoring Microsoft Roadmapand submit your Feedback to help us improve the product as well. And the development team will check your suggestion there and may consider to develop it in advance. We would think highly of each customer’s feedback on our product, and we appreciate for your precious suggestion on how we could improve our products.

Your understanding and patience will be appreciated.

Thank you!

I am still using Windows 10 as I don't like the look of Windows 11. I actually found out about IMAP by typing in a question of what it actually was and how to locate it. The answers I received from Bing were very helpful in finding out where to locate the IMAP data and how to input it. I intend to stay with Mail & Calendar until I am forcibly ejected from it. The new Outlook layout reminds me too much of the email set-up on Windows XP. Why would anyone wish to take a step or two backward beats me.

I am not really tech-savvy, so had to rely on formulating the correct question before I got all the answers I needed regards IMAP & STMP.

If and when I have to join the darkside (New Outlook) I feel much more confident in adding my extra email accounts than I was before.

I and my family use an IMAP service provider for our email. I have been trying to add it to the New Outlook using the same information that I used to make it work in the Mail app, the old Outlook in Windows 7, and on my Apple IPad and IPod, but it fails (apparently in the sync with the Microsoft cloud phase). It is apparent from this stream that many people are having similar problems trying to make their IMAP accounts work.

I am currently using the Mail app on Windows 11, but I keep getting messages that I will be forced to move to the new Outlook which I can't make work. I also understand that the Mail app is no longer being shipped with Windows 11 on new computers starting at the beginning of this year, so if I need to get a new one for me or my family, we would no longer have a way to access our primary email from it.

I gather from your reply that IMAP support is still a work in progress, so it is very important that Microsoft continue to support the Mail app on existing computers and keep making it available on new computers until your IMAP support in the New Outlook works for all the IMAP accounts as well as it did in Mail and the older Outlooks. Moveover, you need to keep us posted as to when this will occur.

The bottom line here is that it would be rediculous if people were unable to access their email on Windows PCs like they are able to from their Apple IPhones, IPads, and computers.
