I just tried the NEW outlook.
I can sort by names A-Z, but then I have to scroll to find the person.
The old outlook, I could just type the first letter and it would jump to that name.
Is there a setting in the new outlook that allows you to jump to the letter when typed?

OK. Sorry about that. I am using my work Outlook. I didn't realize they were different.
What you're talking about is the version I used at my company. The one I have now is one I pay an annual fee to use personally. They're not the same. There is no "other settings" on my version. Thanks anyway.
Jesse Hart's fix worked for me:
I found the fix, or at least for my situation.
Right click on a column header, then view settings.
Click on "other settings"
Under "Other options" make sure to check "Use compact layout in widths smaller than"
For me, this affected the ability to jump to a name (or subject if I sorted that column).
I also find this problem to be super annoying. I've only recently started using the new outlook from the old/corporate version through my company. It's unbelievable that, after so many comments of complaint, the programmers at Microsoft have not done anything about this. It's clearly a simple fix - so easy to do yet why are they ignoring this? It's such a handy, quick tool for finding emails. Please Microsoft, listen to what your users are telling you and do something about this!!!!!!
