Outlook sort by name, but can't jump to name

I just tried the NEW outlook.

I can sort by names A-Z, but then I have to scroll to find the person.

The old outlook, I could just type the first letter and it would jump to that name.

Is there a setting in the new outlook that allows you to jump to the letter when typed?

After reading 2 years of comments and feedback and still no fix, this is crazy. I too will be moving back to the older Outlook version until this is fixed.

I used it very briefly, the new version... and reading your comment it is even more shocking that they removed the active email after sorting. I use conversation mode and I cannot be functional without these two features. I mean, I guess I could, but it takes a serious toll on productivity (and of course mood).

I switched back to the old outlook, trying the new Outlook was probably the worst decision of 2024 in terms of productivity. Hopefully this release will be scrapped all together.

I found the fix, or at least for my situation.

Right click on a column header, then view settings.

    Click on "other settings"

Under "Other options" make sure to check "Use compact layout in widths smaller than"

For me, this affected the ability to jump to a name (or subject if I sorted that column).

These "view settings" and then "other settings" is only able to be seen if you're using Old/Classic Outlook. Right-clicking column headers in the New Outlook does not give this option.
