New Outlook and OneNote integration

I'm wondering how OneNote integration is handled with the "new Outlook" Experience on Windows?

Specifically, will any of these scenarios be supported with the new client?

  • Send to OneNote from Outlook
  • Send Meeting Details to OneNote from Outlook
  • Send page from OneNote via Outlook
  • Outlook Task Flag on page in OneNote
  • Insert Meeting Details in OneNote from Outlook.

In my initial look, I could not see any evidence of these products talking like they do with the Current Outlook on Windows experience. However, I don't have access to the new client at work to test.

Have I missed something? Does anyone have any insight to share?

Update April 2, 2025. Updated instructions to enable the Send to OneNote button.

This seems to be working consistently now across work and personal accounts.

To enable:

Add the OneNote Add-in to the new Outlook. See how to enable an add-in here:

Then, to enable the Send to OneNote button:

  1. Select an email.
  2. In the reading pane, click the 3 dots (top right corner of the reading pane).
  3. Click on Customize actions.

Note: This setting is no longer found in Outlook settings > Email > Customise actions.

On the OneNote side, the meeting details experience has been updated and is rolling out to current channel. This new version of Meeting Details will work with the 'New' Outlook.

However, Flagging Outlook Tasks in OneNote is currently broken if you are using the 'new' Outlook.

This is because the OneNote Desktop app currently uses a direct app connection to the old Outlook. And if the old outlook is not open, the task list won't update and the tasks will go nowhere.

As a work around it is possible to use both the 'new' and 'old' Outlook side by side. Here is how to do it:

  1. Toggle on the new Outlook (Top right of the old app - 'Try the new Outlook'
  2. Pin the new app to your start menu and task bar.
  3. Toggle back to the old app ('New outlook' - top right of the new app - turn it off)
  4. Then access both apps from the pinned icon on the taskbar.

There are some smart things in the new app, but essential things in the old (like 2 way OneNote integration!). So it's a little clunky to get it all right now.

I got to raise the lack of OneNote integration in a recent meeting with the Outlook Team and I was pleased with the importance they put on this. I know that the OneNote team will also close the gap soon with updates to the OneNote -> Outlook side integrations.

While the 'new' Outlook is replacing the free Windows Mail and Calendar Apps in 2024 (The New Outlook for Windows Will Arrive for Everyone in 2024 (howtogeek.com). This is not Outlook as you know it in Office 365.

As an Office user you can happily continue to use the old Outlook (32bit desktop client) until 2029.

That's right. The final days of the old Outlook in Office 365 are still 4 years away. You can happily keep using the old Outlook for a long time yet. However, I suggest that in the meantime you start exploring the new Outlook. And you can run the two Outlooks - Old and New - side by side on your Windows PC.

    Update to my previous response (2nd discussion with Microsoft 365 Online support personnel)

    TLDR

    M365 support states: 'Send to OneNote' in New Outlook is only supported for Exchange accounts as of now. (no date of implementation given)

    However, I have been able to get 'Send to OneNote' working with an outlook.com email (non exchange account) on the New Outlook app on a Windows 11 PC.

    I contacted Microsoft support agent twice. The first support agent just said create a new account and purchase M365 again on that. (I didn't do that because I doubted that work actually work). The second agent gave me additional responses other than "create a new account and start over". I am still investigating with the most recent support agent why Outlook for the Web keeps opening a separate tab and logging in as another account when clicking on a Gmail account (stay tuned, I will update again if I get a response for that).

    TLDR:

    Problem synopsis:

    1. Send to OneNote on New Outlook does not work for GMail and Yahoo accounts. (Send to OneNote worked just fine in Old Outlook for any Outlook.com, Gmail, and Yahoo accounts, and is broken in New Outlook).
    2. Old outlook does not 2-way sync Gmail and Yahoo accounts. (Old Outlook READS Gmail and Yahoo, but any changes made in Old Outlook do not sync to Gmail and Yahoo servers)
    3. Several Customizable Actions are also missing in New Outlook:
    • Send to OneNote (for Gmail and Yahoo accounts)
    • Block sender
    • Report junk, phishing etc
    • Translate
    1. When selecting a Gmail account on the Outlook for the web app, it opens up a new tab and automatically switches to a new (bogus?) account.

    In short I am looking for (new or old) Outlook to 2-way sync with Gmail and Yahoo, read my various email from one central place, and have 'Send to OneNote' enabled. A unified inbox would also be really great.

    Details from conversation with a Microsoft 365 support agent:

    "I understand that you are unable to see the send to OneNote option in New Outlook for your Yahoo and Gmail accounts. As you may know that the New Outlook is still under development and lot of features that are available in classic Outlook are not available in New Outlook yet. Please be informed that the send to OneNote is feature is available if the OneNote add-in is added and the feature to add the add-ins is only supported for the Exchange accounts as of now.

    As you may know that, in Classic Outlook, Send to OneNote option is supported for IMAP accounts because OneNote COM add-in added is integrated. But, whereas in New Outlook, COM add-ins are not yet supported, and we need get Send to OneNote add-in from store using 'All Apps' option. However, this feature is currently limited to only Exchange accounts and not available for IMAP or Cloud Cache in New Outlook.

    Please be informed that the reason Yahoo and Gmail accounts sync calendar 2 ways in New Outlook, as they can be configured as Cloud Cache accounts, whereas in Classic Outlook, it can only be configured as IMAP, which will only sync emails.

    I also understand that you are unable to see the block sender's feature for your Yahoo and Gmail accounts in New Outlook. We want to inform you that currently, the junk email filtering option for IMAP accounts is not supported in the new Outlook application, which is under development and considered to be a known issue with the product. The product team has been made aware, and they are actively working on it.
    At this point in time, we have no final date available as it is too early in the process, hence ETA is still unknown. Please make sure you keep Office up to date to take advantage of feature updates as well as product corrections."

    Thank you for trying to help, but the fact is that my list of available Quick actions is much shorter than yours.

    Furthermore, I can't understand how to add the OneNote feature to the Calendar, which is the most helpful.

    Do you have any idea?

    I am reverting to Old Outlook for that reason!

    The failure to integrate send to onenote into the new outlook makes the new outlook useless for so many office operations. The old outlook was then much better. Also although i should be able to use the classic iutlook for some reason i no longer can open it. That’s why i tried to use the new outlook. Furthermore i resent to installation of these apps without my permission and without even informing me of what you were doing! For hours i was unable to use office 365 and could not find out why. It was only after new apps appeared that i reLized what was happening. I’m embarrassed for you.
