Change the default browser for opening links in Outlook

A few days ago, a popup appeared in Outlook asking me to change my default browser to Edge. I was in a rush so clicked the popup, thus setting the default browser, thinking I could fix it back to Chrome later.

Since then, everywhere I look online says to go to Windows Settings > Apps > Default apps > Chrome > Set default, to change the Outlook default browser back to Chrome.

This method hasn't worked. I've followed these steps, restarted Outlook, restarted my computer, and the links still open in Edge. How do I change this default?

According to your description about "Change the default browser for opening links in Outlook" To understand the situation and be able to offer you relevant suggestions, we would need a little more information from you. Kindly help us in providing the following information.

  • May I know your current environment? Is It Exchange Hybrid, on-premises exchange (Exchange server) or pure cloud?
  • May I please confirm that you get same situation when default browser is selected under Link handling? To check this kindly open your Outlook go to File-->Options-->Advanced-->Scroll to Link handling then choose Default browser-->Ok then close outlook and re-Open it to check if it will make any difference. If you don't have this feature kindly refer to Open file links directly in Office desktop apps - Microsoft Support
  • Would you mind to kindly provide the screenshot of the outlook version are you using? Kindly go to File-->Office Account

This requested information will help us to narrow down the scenario and find the right troubleshooting.

We are looking forward to your response! Thanks for your precious time. Have a nice day!

I have the same problem as mannenoel. I can change the default browser but when I go to apply it I get this message. The end date you entered occurs before the start date.

This did it for me!! I have NO options to change browser preference in my organization-managed Outlook, but following these steps and changing default in the OS to Edge, then back to my preferred browser, fixed links to open in my preference. Thank you, thank you!

I was able to get his answer from a lost forum. Changing Default Browser Worked!!!

We just need to close the apps to get these settings synced up.

    • Closed Chrome
    • Changed the default browser to Edge
    • Clicked a link in an email (went to Edge immediately)
    • Closed Outlook
    • Opened Outlook
    • Change default browser to Chrome
    • Clicked a link (worked like a charm)

A few points on the ghosts of Advanced setting options not showing up

Outlook is being sneaky by no longer showing the set default browser option either in "Link Handling" or in "File and Browser Preferences". In fact the "File and Browser Preferences" section doesnt show up anymore. But the issues seems to be with some form of caching.

Above steps worked for me (Picked up from one of the many forums and answers that I am not able to locate back now since I had to keep closing the apps to reset their pathways. Please give credit to them and let me know if you locate this same answer elsewhere).

I have first answered this here. But pasted the same above for anyone's quick reference to try. https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook_com/forum/all/opening-links-in-outlook-messages-to-open-in/bad121b1-0219-4285-ab50-2678a8cc7170?rtAction=1716190781471
