How to Open Emails in Separate Window in New Outlook

Agreed, Mark. I gave up on the new Outlook and reverted to the current version. The new version of Outlook is like trying to run a business on a child's toy and has absolutely nothing to offer. It is email software that appears to have been created by people who have never used email before. The lack of basic functionality compared to every other current email interface (including Outlook's current version) is egregious - users can't even choose where to save a file beyond OneDrive or Downloads, which is absurd. I don't know why anyone would choose to use the new Outlook in its current state or why Microsoft continues to insist on creating software that is different but not better, and disruptive to the user experience while failing utterly to improve it. Offer users a preview that improves workflow or leave Outlook as-is.

I have found one feature in the "new" outlook that I like (and can't find in the current outlook). You can pin emails so that they are always on top. Outlook 365 on my Mac has had this for a while AND still opens emails in a new window.

This is the second time I've tried the new outlook on W11. Until Micro$oft forces me to go, I'm sticking with the old one.

I confirmed yesterday that this has been partially fixed in the latest preview. HOWEVER, there is some weird issue where often it doesn't properly detect a double click, and the single click results in the behavior we can't stand, and it opens the email in the main window, making the inbox disappear. So far I've not seen an option to get rid of that.

The behavior needs to be the same as Outlook has been for literally decades... a single click highlights the message, a double-click opens the message in a separate window.

I don't understand why Microsoft continues to make unwanted changes that disrupt the workflow in its most critical products. No one asked for this version of outlook. Different does not mean better. In the previous version of Outlook, single clicking never opened an email. I only want to open a message through double click. I only ever want that message to open in a separate window. I want to be able to single click and select multiple messages to move or delete them. All of this functionality is gone in the current version. Workflow is not disrupted, it's completely destroyed. It's as though this version of Outlook was designed by people who have never actually used Outlook. Every single thing requires more clicks and effort. Even the color schemes are so high contrast, it's painful to look at, whether in light or dark mode, and using any of the themes. Yes, I have tried them all. Please escalate these posts to the product team. We are talking about core functionality loss here. This is not ready to roll out.

When I first open the New Outlook, doubling clicking an e-mail does open the message in a new window, however this only works for the 1st e-mail, if I try and do this for another e-mail, it stays within the main Outlook window.  The app can clearly do it, however there must be a bug which stops it working after the 1st e-mail

Yes, that's exactly what i've noticed.

The first mail I double click opens in a new window (as expected).

After that, it doesn't work anymore and it starts to open in the main window, no matter how fast I double click.

It's clearly a BUG.
