When sending emails from QuickBooks with Outlook, edits are discarded and the mail is sent as created by Quickbooks.

The Outlook bug in this year-old thread is back.

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook_com/forum/all/cannot-edit-quickbooks-generated-outlook-emails/cc37fa11-b801-4df4-ac5a-0dfef52be63f

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Create invoice in QuickBooks, click "Email" button.
  2. A draft email is created in Outlook from your default invoice template with the invoice attached.
  3. Edit that email - add or remove text, and send.
  4. Look in Sent Items. The sent email DOES NOT HAVE YOUR EDITS.

This is subtle, and super annoying - how often do you think to check if your e-mail got sent the way you wrote it? I only noticed because I went back to copy some text that I had written for a new e-mail and saw that it was missing from the email as sent.

    Andrew,

I checked with our Escalation Engineers, and they say that the IDNA trace should not lock the OST. It could be our steps that need updating. One of the Escalation Engineers said he would help work through the trace with you. If you know a time you could work on this please let me know. Or, please respond in the In App ticket and we will coordinate it with you. Thanks for taking time to help us with this.

I have pending tasks for the ticket, but have not been able to complete them as of yet. Should be today or tomorrow - sorry. As far as the traces go, the debugging process somehow prevented QuickBooks from creating emails with Outlook. When the debugger was enabled, QuickBooks would report that the OST file was in use and could not be opened to create the email.

    Hi all,

If you have an In App ticket opened for this issue we need help to make traction on the issue. The support team has asked those with active tickets to help get an IDNA trace. If you have been asked for a trace, please do the steps and let support know so we can move forward.

I think support tried with Andrew to get an IDNA trace but the issue did not repro with the trace. Maybe it will repro for someone else and why I am asking for help with this.

If you are seeing the issue but do not have an In App ticket open, please submit one if you have that option. From Outlook click Help, Contact Support. The sooner we get that trace to dev the sooner we can get this mitigated.

Not everyone has the option to submit Help, Contact Support. If you do not but willing to work with support let me know and I will see if I can get it enabled for you.

Marcia per thread, there are workarounds and a temporary fix.

    Workarounds:

    1. use buttons on Format Text ribbon to change mail format from HTML to Rich Text (sometimes called RTF) and back to HTML. This needs to be done for every email you edit before sending. It's a couple of clicks and it's quick but you need to remember to do it each time.

    -or-

    1. click save to save the email as a draft and close it. Once you open it again, changes should stick. You must close the email - saving as a draft is not enough. If you're doing a bunch of emails you can save them all as drafts, and then go and edit them one by one if needed.

    The temporary fix:

Call Microsoft and open a ticket, reference my ticket number 33417431, and ask for the registry key that disables the outlook change that is causing the problem. It's an obfuscated key, and I'm not allowed to put it here. But you can get it from Microsoft support. This key needs to be applied to every machine that has the problem. It will fix the problem for now, but no guarantees that it will continue to work.
