How to remove [External] from Outlook emails, users are getting furious

As the label is only applied to the "From" column and not to the actual Sender value, you can get around this by simply defining your own column to replace the default.

Right click the header of your inbox and open the View Settings. Go to Columns, New Column, set Type to Formula and then enter [From]. You can also add this or other fields from the full editor. (It also supports functions so if the label is every applied to the field itself in a future update there might still be ways to remove it.)

Make sure to add the new column to those shown and move it up to where "From" now is. Remove the original "From".

Close the dialogs and enjoy your inbox free from external hand-holding.

Disclaimer: as you're not breaking anything, just changing a display screen I can't think of an IT policy this would actually violate. But you make this modification at your own risk. And be perhaps doubly cautious when opening external emails.

This is great for sysadmins! Now if only us users had the option of turning it off without asking our sysadmin!

This horrendous decision is due to Microsoft's decades-long complete and utter cluelessness about the primary importance of user needs over the day-to-day control of IT. It's staggering to me that after all these years, Microsoft has STILL failed to change, and clearly didn't even do basic user research to figure out how millions upon millions of users would feel and react to this. It is the stupidest decision to make this feature incapable of being changed by ordinary users. I can no longer see what meetings I have that have been set up by clients. My calendar says EXTERNAL EXTERNAL EXTERNAL across my entire week. My emails can no longer be scanned because the subject line now reads EXTERNAL EXTERNAL EXTERNAL down the entire Inbox. This is corporate stupidity about end users and lack of basic user research at a level I have not seen since the mid-1990s.

Where is Outlook feedback? All our users in our company want this removed and want to give this as feedback. It is a useless feature that makes Outlook so much harder to navigate.

I do not want to disable the external function (thus NOT using Set-ExternalInOutlook -Enabled $false), but just hide the "External" hint in the message list view, because it takes away much room. 

Is it possible to just hide that "External" notice in the messsage list within Outlook and not to disable the function completely?

100% agree. I am now finding market appraisal requests/leads that have come from head office being marked as EXTERNAL and going straight into my junk folder. Not even the 'Clutter' inbox but Junk. These requests are worth 10's of thousands of dollars. STOP changing things with no option to opt out. Just another example of not being able to actually think for ourselves these days.
