Using older versions of Outlook for Mac in business environments
A few days ago, I emailed Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and briefly summarized the problems we have all encountered here with both the Legacy and New Outlook for the MAC over the last 9 months. I included a link to this community forum and asked that someone review/address the problems.
Today a Microsoft Support Escalation Engineer - level 3 called. I’ll briefly summarize our discussion as follows.
Legacy Outlook for the MAC
I explained the ghosting folders issues that started last May with Yahoo, AOL, AT&T, etc. accounts and that many fixes and ideas were attempted by users with no solution yet. I often referred him to our forum for details. While there was no direct response from Microsoft, we did learn indirectly the fix for folder ghosting was to use the free New Outlook for the MAC. Some of us tried that (including me) but not everyone is/was willing to do so because the New Outlook is crippled.
New Outlook for the MAC
While I could have covered several issues here, I focused on the 3 most critical (IMHO);
- Unable to move or copy folders or emails between accounts i.e. my Outlook (Exchange) and Yahoo account.
- Rules not supported in Yahoo account and sometime don’t work in Exchange account.
- No Export option (it’s grayed out)
While the technician seemed to record all of the above, he only offered that the New Outlook was still work in progress. He believes in time they will be corrected. I reminded him it’s been 9 months now.
Nevertheless, my impression was this is the first time this engineer has ever heard any of this. He said he will review the issues I presented today and those documented in our Community forum with the engineering team. He did not ask for what version of Outlook I was running. He said he would get back to me next week.
I concluded in 9 months no one from Microsoft ever responded or provide direction to our frustrations leaving many, many customers to their own devices, losing productivity, and jumping through frustrating hoops. This was unacceptable.
So, we will see. I’m not holding my breath.
@RetiredGeek,
Thanks for the initiative and glad that you were able to speak with a technician. (I, and others have also done so...therefore not holding out much hope!).
In case you have an opportunity to connect with others at Microsoft, it's not just legacy Outlook that has problems synching with Yahoo. When the problem first occurred in May for me, the tech I contacted suggested I try New Outlook. Unfortunately that hasn't solved the synching issue, at least for me.
So for now, I use Apple Mail to manage Yahoo and Legacy Outlook for other accounts. I may try switching default ports and if that doesn't work, try the Thunderbird program and simply give up on Outlook.
