I can't believe I have to ask something so dumb but how to I make Outlook ask me every time where to save the email attachments that I am downloading instead of automatically putting them in the Downloads folder?

Outlook | Windows | Classic Outlook for Windows | For home

I have use the browser version for years, enjoyed it, and just recently Feb-March 2024 I'm getting error message "too many login attempts" so I switched to the app version - it works, but has the download options issue discussed here. I have found the only thing I can do is download my attachments, then I have to go to the download folder, rename them as needed then move them to the folder I want them in. Not efficient or helpful for the app. to be designed this way.

Hopefully, they will bring it back...

I look forward to having this feature back in the New Outook.

This no longer works after Outlook was changed a few months ago. Everything gets automatically saved to the Downloads folder. For a brief period of time in February this looked to have been fixed and you could save to a folder of your choosing but a week or so ago it reverted to the Downloads Folder only. VERY frustrating!! Why has all the previous functionality in Outlook been removed!

I found this page helpful, it worked for me - https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/troubleshoot/data-files/how-to-change-the-folder-where-emails-and-attachments-saved

It involves editing the registry, but that's much quicker than searching through a bunch of pages trying to find an answer for a simple problem. Essentially:

    • Open regedit, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Options (change 16.0 to whatever your version is; you can either go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\ and look for the latest version there, or try 15.0 or 12.0 or 11.0 if 16.0 doesn't exist for you)
    • Create a new string value by going to Edit>New>String Value. Name it DefaultPath.
    • Edit this new string value by double-clicking it and put in the full directory path for the folder you would like to set as your default attachment downloads folder (eg: C:\Users\USERNAME\Downloads). Click OK and exit regedit. That's it.
