I switched to the new outlook and it is no longer showing the total number of emails in each folder.

I guess "Acceptable" depends on who you're asking. Based on OPs initial concern, this reasonably seems like it covers it, and was helpful/sufficient for my needs.

Not trying to be argumentative - I'm genuinely curious - what is a workflow that makes this method wholly unusable? If I recall correctly, you could never get total number of items in each folder to persistently display in the folder pane, only at the bottom for the selected item, so why is hovering to get that info significantly different?

I too had Googled this feature, and came across this thread. I was just about to revert from "New" Outlook, and included this in the reason for reverting, which prompted a help article: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/display-the-total-number-of-messages-in-a-folder-in-outlook-1f47664e-2468-4f0e-8515-4e0596f9553a#PickTab=New_Outlook&picktab=new_outlook Looks like hovering provides this info - I think this helps others issues.

Sorry didn't know I was scolding anyone? Yes the two related issues have been co-mingled in this discussion, was probably my fault years ago. Previously I did make a separate discussion specifically for the root level inbox count for the email account, but all the discussion has continued here discussing that issue along with email counts for each folder within an email account.

For sure I see what you mean in that from a user side they are quite similar issues but it may well be that the underlying fix are completely separate pieces of work for the developers / coders. The accounts, in my set up anyway, are not showing any numbers where as the folders show the number of unread messages so while the complaint is similar it may be the case the solution is vastly different. It also may not be of course, I'm certainly not a software developer myself!
