PLEASE!!! Only answer this if you have completely UNDERSTOOD my question. I've seen countless threads here where people are asking the same question, but the reply they get is NOT the answer to their question.

Microsoft 365 - Outlook (desktop or web) (NOTE: Not regular Outlook (which was wonderful and powerful), but the %^%$## product from M...365 which looks like it was written for little kids writing to their BFFs or for grandmas).
Mark an item as read ONLY AFTER YOU OPEN IT. Not previewed, but opened. Not replied to, but opened!
Do NOT try to tell me how to keep it from marking it read when I view it in the reading pane, or move selection, or after 5 seconds. I DON"T NEED THAT! Pay Attention!
I need a button (in microsoft 365 outlook) that says to mark as read when item is opened just like I had in the original program (that my office has forced me to get rid of in favor of this mess).
BTW - I tried to post a screenshot (as suggested above) but it doesn't work (surprise!!)

From what I see, not many people understood the purpose of this thread.
In new outlook, allow us to double click on the email, open in new window and mark as read.
No extra steps, no select read/unread, no CRL Q.
Microsoft team, please fix this issue and return option that was part of outlook for God knows how many years.

I spent too much time trying to figure this out before finding this thread. We need "Mark as read when opened"!!!!! Going back to the old version now.
I found the answer!
it would not let me post the screenshot so here it is in text:
(Gear/settings)
Mail then Message handling and then under Mark as read, select "Mark displayed items as read as they're selected" and lastly save the change
I have tested this and it marked my messages read after I opened them!
I think I may have help for some here.
I just started using the new Outlook as well (certainly not a joy!) and here is what I have done.
I have gone to the Setting --> Mail --> Message Handling and here is how I have set things.
From there, as I read emails as soon as I decide they are "read" I use the CTRL + Q keystoke to mark the email as read. I was doing this in the old Outlook because I use unread email as a filter for being unread, unanswered, come back to it later, etc. Luckily for a right hander like me (and a little practice) CTRL + Q is an easy keystroke with my left hand. Unlike marking email as unread which requires CTRL + U.

Agreed that it seems to be more like the web version but it is not being presented that way and is definitely not web based. I try once a month to see if they have fixed the issue. I always switch back and always report the same issue which is the only one stopping me from using it. It is a major issue and I certainly hope they don't roll it out without fixing this major lack of functionality that has existed as long as the preview pane has existed.
