new Outlook - change mail spell checker language?

Hi,

I regularly send some emails in English and some in my native language - as most European business people do. In Outlook one language is always set as default spell checker language, but in the old Outlook I could always override this by setting spell checker individually for each message. It took some three clicks, but it was possible. In the new Outlook this option is gone (at least I could not find it) - only thing you can do now is to change default editor spell checking language! This is extremely unfortunate and a huge step back. Please return the option to switch spell checker language when composing the new message. Or even better make it more accessible than in the old Outlook.

    I closed the mail. open again from draft. now the spelling works!!

    Hi,

    I had the same problem and recently found a way to access the spell check in the new Outlook.

    Here is how I accessed it:

    1. Create a new email message.
    2. The list of menu at top (just below the blue ribbon) is automatically updated to include options for the email. Select Options.
    3. The ribbon below the menu will change. Click on Editor (the left most option in this ribbon) then Editor Settings
    4. In the Microsoft Editor Settings panel that pops up you can switch between the different language already selected, and also access Manage spellcheck languages to define up to 3 languages to be used

    I hope that helps.

    Hi,

    for those desperately seeking a workaround, use the web version of Outlook instead https://outlook.office.com/mail/ and a third party spellchecker, I am recommending LanguageTool **** https://languagetool.org/**** an AI-based grammar and spellchecker which automatically detects the language you are currently using. Here some more detailed steps:

    1. Go to your favorite browser (I am using Chrome, but Edge should also work similarly)
    2. Install the LanguageTool browser extension and make sure it is running.
    3. Go to https://outlook.office.com/mail/
    4. Install the web based Outlook as Progressive Web Application (PWA) (does not require admin privileges). Depending on your browser, you can find it a corresponding option in the settings or a small icon appears on the right end of the URL input next to the bookmark icon.

    1. Now you can open the Outlook (PWA) and it appears almost like a normally installed new outlook, but you can use other browser extensions as well.

    As a product manager, I understand the strive to making the product simpler and remove unnecessary features. The old outlook admitably is cluttered with too many features. They have my full support there.

    Yet, I believe it was a short sighted decision to remove the multi-language spell checking. It shows they don't have a good understanding of ways of working in our cultures. Unlike in US, in Europe, we live in a continent with many languages and people are often multi-lingual or have learned multiple languages.

    When I compose emails in any language other than the default language, I end up having red line under most of the text of the email which is disturbing. Additionally, the spell check is almost mandatory when I write email in a language which is not my native language.

    I strongly recommend outlook team to reconsider adding multi-language spelling check. Specially now a days using AI, it should be easy to detect the language and automatically spell check the correct language.
