How to permanently show Folder pane

Suddenly today my folder pane is hidden by default. I have not changed any settings. I can go to View>Layout>Folder pane>Show and it will pop up but it will disappear if I click anywhere but the folder pane. I need to see the folder pane all the time. How can I change this? (And why did it change itself?)

I just figured this out (I know several years later) but in View tab click on "change view" and choose "single". Seems to work

If the window size is reduced to a certain size the app seems to decide not to shrink/wrap text but instead takes away the folder pane to give real estate to the others. Just stretch the window wider if not full screen.

I fixed it using "settings-->-->mail-->layout-->Message Height-->Always use Multiple Rows"

Maybe that will help someone else? Especially if you're using it on a big screen.
