Office Ribbon Too Big -- not a display resolution issue

All Office application display the menus, ribbons, sidebars as way too large.

It is not an issue where going to Settings->Display->Scale & Layout, setting to 100% will fix it. I already have that set. I have also toggled the 'When using multiple displays options' several times within Office applications settings.

Everything else is just great with my display. All text within the viewing panes of Office applications is fine. For instance, in Outlook, the ribbon is huge, the sidebar is huge, I can only see about 4 emails at a time listed. However, where it displays a full email on the right, that text is just fine. If I lower the zoom level it gets too small to read. Also that zoom level does not affect the size of the ribbon or side bar. Same issue in Excel. Ribbon is huge, but the cells of the spreadsheet are normal size.

The file explorer menus and ribbon also display fine. All other non-office applications display fine.

It was working fine. I must have pressed some button inadvertently which increased the size of these items. Or maybe it was because I temporarily hooked my laptop up to a different monitor.

Appreciate it Matthew. I will give it a try soondays. I assume that a .reg file is just like a .txt file but with the .reg extension instead? Thanks... Danny of Riverside CA

Try this, it worked like a charm for me:

    1. Copy the text from below to Notepad and save it to a file with .reg as the extension.
    2. In Windows Explorer double-click the file.
    3. After the update runs, restart your computer.

AS OF 7/5/2022, this solution IS STILL WORKING!!!
I have admin rights already on my company computer, you may need to have an admin do this for you if you don't have those rights. THE FILE MUST BE SAVED AS A .reg file.

Also, this is to fix the size issue in regards to the actual locally installed office applications, not the web versions of these apps.
when you open a text document and save it, give it whatever name you like, save it anyplace you can remember, like your desktop, or My Documents, or whatever, BUT DELETE THE FULL NAME FIELD and use .reg
    Example:
    MakeOfficeSmallAgain.reg

when you save it, then close it, then you just need to double click the new reg file, and it will do that windows security pop up thing. Then, close everything and reboot.

upon reboot, your office apps should appear back to normal.

for Chrome, use the zoom located in the personalized and control button of the browser. Located at the right top corner, click the three points button and then reduce the zoom factor.

I found this is a browser issue, not a Microsoft issue. On Google Chrome, the Office 365 Excel ribbon was just too big.

I tested the Office 365 Excel ribbon size in Firefox and MS Edge, and the Excel ribbon was the correct size. Whala!

So, once I isolated the Office 365 Excel ribbon size issue to the Chrome Browser, the fix was Super Easy.

    1. Open an Excel Office 365 document in Chrome.
    2. Go to setting the three-dot menu on the upper right.
    3. Change Zoom to 100%.

Note that if you use Ctrl + and the mouse to expand the font size of the file's content, the Excel ribbon may or may not grow. If it does, fear not. You know the easy fix now.

    For Excel 365, easy fix:

Click your cursor once on the top green stripe of the Excel spreadsheet.

Now hold down CTRL and hit the PLUS sign

This ENLARGES the display resolution but also brings up the little popup in the right-hand side that you can click RESET on, which should reset the whole thing back to the way it's supposed to be.

Hope this helps someone else - it was a pain until I figured it out (not sure it works for desktop software Excel versus online).
