Error code 80090016 Trusted Platform Module has malfunctioned.

When I try to add a new Office 365 email to my outlook I get the error below.   I think it's because of my "Work or school account" which I want to remove. I'm not sure how my email was signed up for this second account. I set up this computer for home use only, I won't be using any of the Microsoft Azure features.

My question is, what will happen when I remove my “work account” and leave my Microsoft account?  Everything is backed up on Onedrive, I just don’t know what to expect because when I went to remove it, it warned me about losing data and settings.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

    Hi Microsoft Community,

The TPM Error/Code 80090016 is clearly a crisis - we need to immediately collaborate with Microsoft and fix this punitive bug.

This bug manifested a long time ago - how is it possible that Microsoft cannot or does not address this massive issue?

Let's BEG for help if needed - this is so crippling EVERY hour of EVERY day.

And the answer cannot be "hacking the registry" or any effort that is above the acumen of Jane/John Q. Citizen.  Heaven forbid a "typo/mistake" is made and the entire PC is rendered inoperable.

    PLEASE HELP!

    Hello Steve Hanley,

If convenient, I consider you could try to check account in Access work or school in Windows settings, disconnect your account from there. Then try to add account in Outlook, when below page prompts, select “No, sign in this app only” to test if this way works:

    Best Regards,

Hi, spoke with Microsoft yesterday. They say this happens when both, work/school and private microsoft accounts are being used with the same email address (login address). I said this has to do with recent MS updates as I have been using both accounts since the beginning of this year with no problem. No response to that. Potential solution: change login name (email address) to your private office account. Done that but does not work so far. Maybe propagation is required on MS side.

I have a similar case with one of our users, while he is using more than one account, the login id / email is different between the accounts.

Using the "only sign into this app" helps to some degree, he still gets authentication popups all the time which makes it a pain to work.

If you require any logs or troubleshooting, please feel free to reach out.

    Many thanks and best

    Dirk
