Error code 80090016 Trusted Platform Module has malfunctioned.

When I try to add a new Office 365 email to my outlook I get the error below.   I think it's because of my "Work or school account" which I want to remove. I'm not sure how my email was signed up for this second account. I set up this computer for home use only, I won't be using any of the Microsoft Azure features.

My question is, what will happen when I remove my “work account” and leave my Microsoft account?  Everything is backed up on Onedrive, I just don’t know what to expect because when I went to remove it, it warned me about losing data and settings.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

We get this issue all the time.

What i've found consistently is that it happens to users offsite when setting up Outlook for the first time. If I get the users to try adding the account again whilst being connected to the VPN it will work.

    1. Exit Outlook and Teams
    2. Open a command window with admin access (run as administrator)
    3. Type the command dsregcmd /leave and press Enter
    4. Type the command dsregcmd /join and press Enter
    5. Restart the machine after above command finished
    6. Open the Outlook, it should pop up the window for password and MFA code, please sign in with your account again
    7. Open the Teams, it should pop up the window for password and MFA code, please sign in with your account again

So after many months it appears as though the organisations duo security system is casing the issue.

We use Duo for dual authentication.

if you take the user out of the secure group in AD,

    Then wait 15 minutes.

Get them to logout and then login .

If no message then re-add them to the secure group in AD.

    wait 15 minutes.

get them to log off an then log in

seem to be working for us.

    hope this helps
