Error code 80090016 Trusted Platform Module has malfunctioned.

When I try to add a new Office 365 email to my outlook I get the error below.   I think it's because of my "Work or school account" which I want to remove. I'm not sure how my email was signed up for this second account. I set up this computer for home use only, I won't be using any of the Microsoft Azure features.

My question is, what will happen when I remove my “work account” and leave my Microsoft account?  Everything is backed up on Onedrive, I just don’t know what to expect because when I went to remove it, it warned me about losing data and settings.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

    Hello everyone,

The issue has been raised internally to the team that's in charge of TPM.

You can try to follow the below steps that might help to mitigate the issue until we receive a fix:

    1. Repair Office application.
    2. Uninstall Trusted Platform Module from Device Manager > Security Software > Trusted Platform Module > uninstall
    3. Try:

    a. Open Settings > Accounts > Access work or school

    b. Click on the Organizational account you added previously

    c. Click on "Disconnect"

    1. Reset Office state: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/office/troubleshoot/activation/reset-office-365-proplus-activation-state
    2. Try manual recovery / Re-adding the machine to domain:

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/office365/troubleshoot/authentication/connection-issue-when-sign-in-office-2016

    1. Test with a new windows profile
    2. Add this registry key and see if it helps:

    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WorkplaceJoin, "BlockAADWorkplaceJoin"= dword:00000001

    1. Open CMD as an admin & ran the command - DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth. Reboot
    2. Reimage PC

    Also check the following articles:

    Hope this helps!

    Hey Anna, Hey Everyone,

worked some more on this and maybe this helps one or the other, i saw some improvement after i removed the users account from the work accounts section in the settings, it will come back as soon as you configure teams again and it looked like it did not run into the TPM errors at this time.

Closed all O365 software, removed the users O365 account from the work accounts section, left AD in place.

Started Teams and it configured as expected.

I still cant setup his PIN anymore so something still needs to be done but at least there was a change and improvement.

@Anna from MS, still open to help provide logs and troubleshooting

    Have a great day

    Many thanks and best

    Dirk

    Hi Anna

I see that you are listed as a Microsoft Agent and moderator for this forum.  I think that means that you are a Microsoft employee, and I would hope that means you have some means to provide feedback to a customer support group at Microsoft.

Would you please find some way to add this "password amnesia" and TPM error to some development list that someone actually cares about?  It seems that the masses that are seeing this critical error and loss of functionality are unable to wake anyone at Microsoft that can do more than flip to the appropriate page in the customer service guide and read their sincere apology that we are experiencing this issue.

As I mentioned in a previous post I have worked for a couple larger software companies including as a Field Product Manager.  I have never seen nor do I ever care to see again the multitude of walls and barriers that Microsoft has erected to keep valuable feedback from returning to the person(s) in charge and destroying their fragile view that these problems do not ultimately rest on their shoulders.

As users we have tried a multitude of hacks, prayers, and probably even some violence against our computers to try to fix these problems.  These issues are repeatable and verifiable.  These issues have not been fixed since the initial rollout of build 2004.  I can't begin to estimate the amount of collective time and effort that has been expended by the many users and IT people trying to fix these problems.

Can you help in some way?
