Outlook displays banner that says: Check your connection Open a browser to sign into ______.com and receive new emails

When I click the button it opens a generic msn webpage. My company uses DSSO so everything is already signed in. Can't seem to find anyone else who has had this error. I have tried repairing office, recreating mail profile etc.

Happens when internet has a blip.

I'm currently living with it and just unplug the ethernet cable and plug it back in again to stop the error.

Best solution is to get your ISP to sort out a stable connection for you.

So I started getting this issue this morning. There was a brief message that flashed up about WiFi connection when I logged on, which I ignored since I'm using my docking station with wired ethernet, and everything was working fine.

But thanks to Michael's message above, I investigated, to get rid of the annoying banner.

Turned off the WiFi adapter (was connected to both) and the banner went away.

Detached the network cable and turned WiFi back on, and indeed my connection was not live. My WiFi login credentials had in fact expired, and clicking on the banner which reappeared in Outlook, opened the browser which was intercepted by our WiFi login prompt page. Logged in, connected, and all was well again.

Plugged ethernet cable back in (without turning off WiFi), and no banner message.

So it seems that for whatever reason, Outlook likes to check all networks for access (or tried WiFi first, but didn't get rid of banner error when successfully syncing over the wired network afterwards).

Of course, the browser was smarter and loaded the web page via whatever connection it could, never giving me the chance to reconnect the WiFi.

Please try this in case it re-appears and without turning off and on wifi adapters.

This feature is available in Outlook for Windows for Current Channel (Preview) users on Version 2004 (Build 12730.20150) or later. Following the registry entry will disable it.

Run cmd normal with user rights.

    reg add "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Options\General" /v "EnableImprovedCaptivePortalExperience" /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

Just started getting this banner two days ago and the above solution has worked great for me. Thanks for posting that!

My solution was pretty simple. User had Wired and Wireless on at the same time that was confusing things.

Basically, Outlook thought it was a cell or 'weak' signal from what I could tell, and thus didn't want to pull down email over what it thought was a metered connection.

Disconnected WIFI and all was well in the world.
